Marianne Fox is an Indiana CPA with B.S. and M.B.A. degrees in Accounting from Indiana University. For more than 20 years, she has enjoyed teaching full-time--initially in Indiana University's School of Business; since 1988 in the College of Business Administration at Butler University. As the co-owner of an Indiana-based consulting firm, Marianne has extensive experience consulting and training in the corporate and continuing education environments. Since 1984, she has coauthored more than 35 computer-related books; and has given presentations on accounting, computer applications, and instructional development topics at a variety of seminars and conferences.

"Lawrence C. Metzelaar"--Series editor and coauthor of "essentials Excel 2002 Level 1, Level 2," and "Level 3." Lawrence C. Metzelaar earned a B.S. in Business Administration and Computer Science from the University of Maryland, and an Ed.M. and C.A.G.S. in Human Problem Solving from Boston University. "Linda Bird"--Author of "essentials PowerPoint"(R) and "Level 2." Linda Bird specializes in corporate training and support through her company, Software Solutions. She has successfully trained users representing more than 75 businesses, including several Fortune 500 companies. She custom designs many of her training materials. Her clients include Appalachian Electric Power Co., Goodyear, Pillsbury, Rockwell, and Shell Chemical. Her background also includes teaching at Averett College and overseeing computer training for a business training organization.

Using her training experience as a springboard, Linda has written numerous books on PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Access, and Windows. Additionally, she has written more than 20 instructor's manuals and contributed to books on a variety of desktop application programs. "Keith Mulbery"--Author of "essentials Word 2002 Level 1, Level 2," and "Level 3." Keith Mulbery is an associate professor in the Information Systems Department at Utah Valley State College, where he teaches computer applications courses and assists with curriculumdevelopment. Keith received his B.S. and M.Ed. (majoring in Business Education) from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Keith has written several Word and WordPerfect textbooks. His previous book, "MOUS essentials Word 2000," received the Utah Valley State College Board of Trustees Award of Excellence in January 2001. In addition, he was the developmental editor of "essentials Word 2000 intermediate" and "essentials Word 2000 advanced." Keith also conducts hands-on computer application workshops at the local, state, and national levels, including at the National Business Education Association convention.

"Dawn Parrish Wood"--Author of "essentials Access 2002 Level 1, Level 2," and "Level 3." Dawn Parrish Wood is an independent contractor, and provides software training through her own business, Software Support. She teaches customized courses to local businesses and individuals in order to upgrade employee skills and knowledge of computers. Dawn has written materials for these specialized courses for her own use. She also provides software consultation to local businesses. Previously, she was the computer coordinator/lead instructor for the Business & Industry Services division at Valdosta Technical Institute in Valdosta, Georgia. The majority of the coursework she taught was in continuing education. Prior to teaching, she worked as a technical support representative and technical writer for a software firm. She lives in Valdosta, Georgia, with her husband, Kenneth, and their two daughters, Micaela (4 1/2 years) and Kendra (2 1/2 years). Both girls have been her superlative students, learning more on the computer every day.

Comprehensive is Right

I used this in class for a whole quarter, got an A in the course, and didn't have to switch screens every 10 seconds online to figure out what was going on. I did the chapters my class didn't cover and it really goes in depth to show you what Excel can do. Kept the book for my husband to use in his class and for the gamer class/stat charts he makes up. Even if you don't have access to a formal class, you can set up the work in an Excel spreadsheet and use this book to practice new techniques. Highly recommend it if you're going to teach yourself Excel to improve your marketability. Don't be afraid of a funky copy - clear packing tape works wonders. The tabs tend to tear/bend on a used copy. I saved over $100 over the school bookstore price by finding a copy that looked like a raptor shredded it, then taping it back together so it was both portable and readable. Now my Excel skills are ready to off-road :)

Bad at excel? Buy this book

I used this book to learn how to use Excel 2013 for a class that I took in community college. This book gives you step by step instructions on how to complete the different tasks. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to better their Excel skills. Also, this book is great for if you are using excel and forget how to do a certain task, you can reference back in the book and find what it is that you were looking to do.

Anyone who desires to learn the mysteries of Excel 2013 without spending the couple hundred bucks for a full on course in it should purchase this book instead. It is spiral bound, which makes it easy to leave open next to your computer while you explore the program. The practice exercises included within the text make learning the material very manageable. Many college courses throughout the US call for this book as well, so if you don't like it you can easily sell it to a college student for $100 or so. Excel is one of the most important skills necessary in this Web 2.0 world we live in. Definitely worth the investment.

Paintings are nice, but many with a yellow-brownish tinge and too small

I do not know if it is because of the age of the book (1996), but all paintings have a yellow-brownish tinge, maybe because of the yellow underpaintings? So sometimes I miss the other colors like blue and green or these colors are not strong enough. But the colors are not muddy and are good in contrasts. Some of the paintings are too small to see the details. This is not always because of the smaller format of the book. The paintings show mainly nice still lifes and landscapes.

GOOD TEXT BUT TOO MUCH YELLOW-ORANGE PAINT

Oil Painting for the Serious Beginner is a well thought out book for the serious or not so serious artist who would like to paint in oils. It begins with the materials used; brushes, knives, canvasses, etc. then continues on to the fundamentals; drawing, color charts, the basic palettes, etc. Chapter 3. deals with how to begin painting; subject matter, sketching in your subject, brush work and painting with a knife.

Chapters 4 and 5 deal with still lifes and landscapes. No portraits are included and the few human forms that are included are faceless. I presume the author feels that this subject matter is not for the beginner or needed to be included in another book.

Most of the work was good, however, I felt that there was not enough space being spent in the development stages of the paintings. Furthermore, his predominant use of yellow and yellow orange paints was not appealing to me. Most are dull and muddy looking. I was not impressed by most all of them. The basic text was informative and would help but not inspire a beginning artist

I was surprised that someone was disappointed that this one book didn't cover everything! What book does?
The fact that it doesn't even pretend to, that the author explains his palette and his technique is exactly what makes the book so valuable. It was one of the first books I bought ten years ago when I started painting, and I was so relieved to find that I could go through it, emulating his approach, mixing colors in a limited way (so that they are manageable!), etc. This book and "The Oil Painting Course You've Always Wanted" (Lechen), taught me to paint as surely as if I'd enrolled in an art school. I recommend both of them very highly. Then go to Al Gury, "Alla Prima," and Tolley, "Oil Painters Solution Book," and you've got what you need. Oh. And most recently, Carole Marine's "Daily Painter".

This notebook makes a strong point about how Socialization is crucial. But when we look at companies like 3M or HP, they are very team-oriented as well as individual-oriented. Organizationally, Japanese companies enforce the formation of cross-function teams, but in 3M's case it's more voluntary, spontaneous, or autonomous. But the difference is a matter of degree, not kind and having a decent notebook is crucial to this process.

I have to admit that socialization is harder in the U.S. because of its individualism and incentive systems. The Japanese incentive system is more team-oriented. And in principle, we don't lay off people unless they have access to the Longman Activator. Consequently, it is relatively easy to share experiences at Japanese companies.

If you can do socialization, your teams are stronger than Japanese ones, because you have strong individuals. Strong individuals and a strong team are complementary and stationary is a key element of this. To institutionalize team-oriented spirit, however, U.S. organizations may need strong corporate cultures. 3M, HP, or the Marine Corps, all of them have very strong corporate values. For us, it's relatively easy to do that without strong organizational cultures.

All in all, the Nick Ham - Longman Essential Activator Workbook is a useful and aggregated tool in today's modern business world and can push strong middle managment individuals onto a higher organisational plane especially within a Hyper Text organisation unilaterally.

About the Author

Deborah Blum is a Pulitzer Prize winning science writer, former president of the National Association of Science Writers, and Professor of journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the author of such award-winning books as Love at Goon Park: Harry Harlow and the Science of Affection, Sex on the Brain, and The Monkey Wars. She has also written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Discover, Psychology Today, Life, Health, The Utne Reader, Mother Jones, and discovery.com.

Mary Knudson is a medical writer at work on a book on heart failure to be published by the Johns Hopkins University Press. She wrote about medicine for the Baltimore Sun for seventeen years and won an NASW Science-in-Society Award. On the Primary Faculty at the Johns Hopkins University Master of Arts in Writing Program, she teaches science/medical writing and the Literature of Science.

Robin Marantz Henig is a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine and author of 8 books, including Pandora's Baby (2004) and The Monk in the Garden (2000). She is a winner of the 2004 NASW Science-in-Society Award and three-time recipient of the June Roth Memorial Award for medical writing. Her writing appears in The Best American Science Writing 2005.

Handy guide for would-be science writers

The editor's note says that the primary goal of this book is "to help train a new generation of science writers." I think the key word there is "help." One is certainly not ready to go out and be a science writer after reading this slim volume, but then one shouldn't expect to be.
What I think this book does do is to give the reader some idea of what's involved in being a science writer and to provide numerous pointers along the way. This is done in several ways. The first section of the book contains half-a-dozen chapters on the different "homes" of science writers: newspapers, magazines, journals, broadcast media, etc. The second section focuses more on technique: the use of sources, handling statistics, and so on. The third section addresses science writing from a topical perspective: how to write about subjects like biology, astronomy, and technology. And the fourth section has several chapters on being a science writer at various sorts of institutions (universities, government agencies, businesses), rather than for the media.
Each chapter is written by a different person who is an expert in that area. For someone like me who knows his science writers, there are some notable names here: Julie Ann Miller, editor of Science News, has a chapter about writing for trade journals; John Noble Wilford, who covered Project Apollo for the New York Times and wrote the very first book to come out about Apollo 11, addresses writing science books; PBS personality Ira Flatow discusses doing science on television.
The book concludes with an appendix covering useful sources of information, which seems handy. I particularly want to order the chart of the fundamental particles--I've never been able to keep those straight!
So this is a very useful book for someone going into science writing and interesting, too, to anyone who wants to know what's involved in covering science from a journalistic perspective.

Welcome information and a good read.

I am a recently retired scientist and finally have the time to do some things important to me such as science writing. So I looked for a source to guide and inspire me. The Field Guide is all I could have wanted.

The editors have selected some of the best in the field to write and update the chapters. They begin each chapter with a helpful introduction to it's author. The Field Guide has excellent, timely, and useful information. It contains 'how to' chapters, 'where to look' and 'how to interview' chapters. Strunk and White would be impressed with the many examples of good writing. The Elements of Style, Fourth Edition

If you're a science writer, or want to be, you need the Field Guide as a reference and inspiration.

This book is written by a variety of professional writers who seem to be intent on sharing all of the (now-public) secrets to their success. Everything from finding a story to developing your style to maintaining sources and organizing information is covered. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in writing about science, and I would also mention it to anyone who would like to enrich their science writing.
