Every Rose Has Its Thorn

Set at summer camp for the handicapped, 'The Fight' shows the life of the handicapped in a light that I'd never imagined. You know the golden rule: don't hit girls or guys wearing glasses. I'd always imagined the handicapped as a benevolent fraternal order; I've never imagined 'them' behaving the same way 'normal' kids do when egos are rubbed the wrong way.

'The Fight' also encapsulates the sheer will and determination that is the embodiment of the human spirit; where there's a will there's a way; man can do anything he sets his mind to. Not only are physical challenges faced and conquered in 'The Fight'. but mental and emotional challenges are faced as well - by Dave Riggler, his friends, as well as his enemies.

I give this story 4 stars out of 5 on the following scale:
+ poor read
++ so-so read

++++ excellent read
+++++ life changing read

Note of caution: 'The Fight' contains a good amount of profanity...the kind that gets slung about when egos are pushed to the limit.

About the Author

Constantine Sedikides�is Professor of Psychology at the University of Southampton, UK. Steven J. Spencer�is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Social Psychology Division at the University of Waterloo, Canada. He received his doctorate from the University of Michigan and has held faculty positions at the State University of New York at Buffalo and Hope College. He maintains an active research program that investigates self-image maintenance processes, motivated social perception, and stereotyping. He has served his discipline as an associate editor at the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, and as a consulting editor at the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Self and Identity. He is currently the secretary and chair-elect of the executive committee of the Society for Experimental Social Psychology.

The other side of history

A brilliant intellectual pursuit that gives a glimpse of Nehru's intellect, comprehension and culture. In the myriad of Western opinions of human progress, 'discoveries' and colonialism, Nehru's Glimpses stand out for its bold 'other view' of history as well as generous and magnanimous acknowledgement of the merits of every civilisation. To have the 'Glimpses' lost on one, as a mere rambling collection of letters would be tragic. To appreciate the 'Glimpses' one must understand the context in which it was written. It was not meant as an exercise to outline history for the world with the global audience in mind. It was merely a father's restricted dialogue with a daughter outside the prison walls with the intention of instilling pride in her culture and history. And maybe, as an inspiration to India's freedom fighters to stand up against the might of a hegemonic empire and its propaganda on history and civilisation. While the bleakness of his and the Colonial India's circumstances colour his opinions slightly, it does not blind him to historical realities.
That a book with such a narrow, domestic agenda subsequently appealed to the wider audience internationally is probably the finest testament of Nehru's brilliance.

Masterpiece

A very concise yet informative survey of world history from the antiquity. This book touches almost everything important in history. Could be used both for recreational reading and also as a primer in world history for a university/school course. The only flaw in the book is that it stops abruptly in 1932. No fault of Mr Nehru, though. I guess someone should work on this book and bring it up to date.

History by a history maker.

Nehru himself calls the book as "Ramblings", given the background that book is a compilation of a whole bunch(196) of lengthy letters to his daughter, Indira Priyadarshini, during his stay in various goals across British Raj (which made him rely on memory than references). His main aim was to introduce his lovely daughter to the world but NOT to be a historian. He starts from the pre-Indus Valley civilization days and ends just before the dawn of WW II in this 971-page book. The book, apart from being journal of events in history, talks about opinions of Nehru on various events with more weightage to his favorite ones.
The book with Nehru's democratic spirit, his scietific and rational approach, his masterly narration with a poetic temper and his control over the language make the book immensely readable.

About the Author
John M. Butler is a NIST Fellow and Special Assistant to the Director for Forensic Science, Office of Special Programs, at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Dr. Butler earned his PhD from the University of Virginia while doing DNA research in the FBI Laboratory's Forensic Science Research Unit. He has won numerous scientific awards, including being named Science Watch’s #1 world-wide high-impact author in legal medicine and forensic science over the last decade (July 2011). He has over 150 publications in this field and is a frequent presenter on the topic of DNA typing, and has authored four other DNA Typing books including Advanced Topics in Forensic DNA Typing: Methodology. Fundamentals and Beyond

I needed some very concise and specialized information about binning strategies, and I did find it inside this book. In general from the reading of this book, I must say that almost anyone interested in the field should read it.
It is wonderful to be able to read one of those that have contributed so much to our area of work. And for those of us that haven't t got the chance to listen to Dr Butler lectures, it is very nice to read his opinions in the amenable and organized way he presents the whole issue.
Thanks Dr Butler!

No one loves studying DNA

But the book was exactly as advertised, its in great shape and has come in very use full in class. DNA is not an easy topic, but this book/author has a way of breaking it down into understandible sections. I've had 2 other DNA books, and simply could not keep up with the words used and the pace of the book. This is not the case with this book. Very satisfied.

If you want to learn about DNA Typing ask the expert

Dr. Butler was one of the developers of DNA typing. I have heard him lecture on it several times. He recommended this as a starter. I am enjoying getting more in-depth information than I could get in a lecture. This is a good book to start learning about this interesting subject and I would recommend it to those trying to get started in this field.

Expected more

For $14, I expected more. This is an absolutely stripped down, minimal content introduction to the basic concepts of information security. The whole book (its more like a pamphlet) is only 48 3x5 inch pages, including appendices. It might be an appropriate book for someone who finds themselves saying "I have no idea what information security is; where should I even start", but beyond that it's not very useful.

Very interesting book on anatomy and evolution

I read page after page. I was at the last page when I recongnized.

I had the benefit of being one of Dr. Langdon's students many years ago.

The depth of his understanding of anatomy is difficult to fathom.

He never used a single note to guide his teachings. He didn't need them. He was capable of drawing any structure throughout its evolutionary development from memory.

The title of my review says it all: first rate. This book honors anatomy and evolutionary biology on every page. Nothing makes sense in biology, we are reminded, without evolution, and the author never loses sight of that truth.

The Book for SCA Women Fighters

I am not a woman (obviously) but I am a fighter in the SCA (and a knight and a duke, just for the record). I have attended Ms. Beck's seminars and I have read her book. As a fighter and a trainer of women fighters, I find the technical details of her book generally accurate and helpful. Although she (by necessity) paints her observations of female physiology with a broad brush, her advice and training suggestions are by-and-large on-target.
Where Beck's book really shines is in its insights into the mind of the female fighter. Men who take up fighting (or any martial art, I imagine) have _no_ concept of the "battle" a woman must go through just to set foot onto the fighting field or into the arena. Beck knows the baggage and "inner demons" that ladies must wrestle with (she calls it the "lizard brain"), and her advice on how to win that mental battle is laser-beam accurate.
I have been in Beck's seminars and seen, at the conclusion, a room full of women in tears because Beck's words addressed their frustrations and struggles so directly. If you have ever felt "unwelcome" on the fighting field, or felt like you had to let a man win a fight in order to be a "good girl," or felt tears uncontrollably welling up in your eyes when you received a particularly good "butt wrap," then there's a message in this book that you need.
I know women who have read this book who, after years of SCA fighting, finally felt like they had achieved real insight, and were ready to break down mental barriers that they had only been vaguely aware of.
Men who read or review this book may say, "I don't see what the big deal is." Believe me, this is a book that will be extremely helpful, on a very primal level, to nearly any woman who wants to put on a suit of armor. "The Armored Rose" isn't so much about SCA fighting as it is about empowerment.
(Incidentally, I'd suggest this book for _any_ woman who is struggling with what seems to be recurring failures or frustrations in just about any competitive field - sports, business or politics, for example. Although you'll get a lot of pictures of women swinging swords that you don't really need, you may find the advice on how to "play with the boys" and overcoming what Beck calls the "Five Hurdles" worth the cover price.)

Simply a must-have for the female fighter, and those who teach her.

Without overwhelming the reader with excessive jargon, Dr. Tobi Beck (Duchess Elina of Beckenham) clearly and concisely identifies the differences between male and female fighters, both physiological and phychological, and discusses the variations in training that these differences necessitate. She learned what she wrote and what she teaches first hand, strapping on the gear, taking the bruises, and shedding the tears, for more than twenty years. To say she is an expert on this topic is an understatement of the higest order. She's not the greatest fighter on earth, but she can teach you how to beat them.

What she writes benefits both the woman who wishes to master the skills required to be a successful warrior, and the teacher who would assist her. I read this book twice in one day at this most recent Pennsic, these readings punctuated by dashing across camp several times to have Tobi illustrate something to me, or, in my immodesty, to show her that I well and truly understood something she wrote, that I "got it". This book is well written, clearly illustrated, and easy to follow (even for a dumb stick-jock like me). Having read this book, I believe now that I actually have a lesson or two that I could teach the female fighters in my Kingdom that will improve their skills and make them better warriors. The first part of those lessons is to hand them their own copy of this book, which I have bought for them.

the author of this book did not mean it to be for women fighters in random martial arts. She states specifically that it is for ***SCA*** combat. It serves its purpose perfectly. For those who complain she lacks credentials.... being one of the first women in the SPECIFIC SPORT SHE IS WRITING ABOUT is a perfectly valid credential for what she's trying to do.

None are better than the Supernatural

For the record, I am an absolute, unapologetic, died-in-the-wool Supernatural fan. And I mean FAN! I have all the DVD's for Seasons 1-10. I have several books about Supernatural (most of which I have bought here at Amazon.com). None are better than the Supernatural: The Official Companion books. I have each book from Season 1 to Season 7. They provide a succinct synopsis of each episode along with insights from the actors (not just the two very excellent stars, Jared Padelecki and Jensen Ackles) but even from many of the actors whether in continuing roles or those who appeared for a few or just one episode). There are comments from the various directors, the show's originator, Eric Kripke, the various writers. There are sidebars describing how certain episodes came into being, the difficulties encountered and resolved in filming the many episodes, and some of the mythologies encompassed in Supernatural (and the embellishments given to them by the show's writers). I have waited for Seasons 8, 9 and 10, but they have yet to appear. It may be that there will be no more of these Episode guides but I have read and re-read Seasons 1-7 many times. The books are well worth the price for rabid Supernatural fans like me who want to know everything and anything about this remarkable television series.

SUPERNATURAL - GRAVE DISCOVERIES

For fans of SUPERNATURAL, this series of Official Companion books is exactly what it claims to be: an excellent partner to the shows themselves, sharing with the reader the behind-the-scenes work that goes into the making of this addictive TV show. This fourth volume follows the same formula as the previous three: a synopsis and discussion of every episode, a generous helping of color photos featuring the cast, plenty of black and white photos spread throughout the book, essays on the various monsters that populate the season, discussions about the show's crew, and chapters on the season's main characters (featuring comments by the actors who played them.)

This book is fun to read and author Nicholas Knight does a very good job of bringing context and depth to the material included. It's worth noting that these books do not shy away from the cast, creators, or crew taking a critical view of their work as well as sometimes praising it, which helps to add dimension to the experience of discovering what makes this show tick. You will also find a complete cast listing for every episode.

One word of caution: don't read this book until you've seen the shows. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the fifth volume in the series. The journey of Sam and Dean Winchester continues to be a fascinating one to follow and this book adds additional layers to the paths they traverse. Enjoy!

SUPERNATURAL: THE SECRETS BEHIND THE SHOW

For fans of SUPERNATURAL, this quick read is a certain plus to add to your collection. There are lots of black and white photos of the cast and the assorted creeps they encountered throughout season one. There's also a great color photo section. Each episode is discussed in detail, highlighting both the production successes and failures encountered along the way. Including plenty of insightful quotes from the cast and production staff, this book provides the reader with plenty of answers for those things you might wonder about after watching the show.
My only gripe is that the font is a bit small and at times you find yourself straining to read some of the text and the "Did you know?" items that appear in shaded backgrounds. Even so, a small quibble for what is truly a keepsake and, no doubt, a one-day collector's item.
Delivery by Amazon was very speedy and the books were well packaged to avoid damage.
