Brief but good!

This book is a brief insight into the Judean uprisings against Rome in 4 BC. Sidney E Dean mainly relies on the historian Flavius Josephus for his information.
Publius Varus was appointed Governor of Syria, Rome's eastern province, in 7 BC. When civil unrest surfaced in Judea in 4 BC it was his responsibility to deal with it. The author writes well and outlines the causes for rebellion plus Rome's response through Varus and his three legions. The end result was disastrous for the Jewish people as thousands were killed and many were sold into slavery. Augustus, the emperor at the time, was pleased with Varus's ruthless handling of the crisis, so much so that in 7 AD he was posted to Germania, Rome's northern frontier, to keep the region pacified. However, unlike Judea Varus's self confidence proved to be his nemesis.
Unfortunately, this eBook is on the brief side with only 150 pages. I would recommend that the author should reduce the price to around $1. Apart from this I feel that this booklet is a good little reference to add to one's library on Roman history.

Quick, and to the point.

This goes by pretty quickly, and that makes it harder to read. There's a lot packed into this book, and if you just plan on reading it, you'll miss a lot. If you're looking for a good, solid idea of what happened in that time, this will give that you.
