Interesting book. Some old stuff and new twists on old stuff. The author discusses some forms of the old ways in more detail than other contemporary authors. Worth the read.

Good for beginners, but others will find little of value

"Germanic Magic" is fine in its way, but in my opinion, it fails to be outstanding because it does not seem to add anything to the discussion of Germanic magic. I can't find anything within it that isn't covered in a half-dozen other books or websites (including the author's own). Certainly if "Germanic Magic" is to be your first exposure to the subject, there is nothing within it that is particularly *bad*. A beginner can by all means buy it and do well for herself. The problem is that there is nothing within it that's particularly outstanding, and if you have already read a few other reputable books on the subject, and/or have done extensive research on the web, you might be disappointed that there wasn't more original work to be found. But as I say, there's nothing inherently wrong with it, either.

Swain Wodening's book is a fabulous compendium of information on runes, spa also called sidhr, and rune galdoring. It is a must have for anyone interested in the use of any of the above. Loved the book!!!

Highly Entertaining

The whole menagerie series is excellent. I have not played Bridge for years, re=read this several years later and it is still amazing. How Mollo invents these bridge hands and the situations around their play is quite brilliant.

If you understand the subtleties of bridge (particularly the Acol bidding system) these are some of the most entertaining books ever written.

To quote the Hideous Hog: "Why didn't you lead a trump, we could have murdered the contract?"
A bit unfair to criticise the Rabbit for not leading a trump when he didn't have one.
"Bah! He didn't even try .."

He first became interested in Jefferson's gardening and farming pursuits while studying the trees Jefferson imported from abroad for planting on the grounds of the University. He really enjoyed the book! He commented/discussed it with several other people. It is written much like a diary or journal, so I thought it might be a bit tedious to read, but he liked it and that's what counts :)

Can you imagine how he might have loved the availability of the internet of today

I consider Thomas Jefferson to be one of earliest masters of gardening-among other things. So any book relating to his life and works is worth owning. I thank the publishers for taking a chance and printing up these chapters for the general public to be able to view and use. He really was a master dabbler when it came to experimenting and seeking out rare and unique treasures. Can you imagine how he might have loved the availability of the internet of today?

I have become more interested in Thomas Jefferson, and this book gives interesting insights not only of Jefferson as a planter, and plantation owner, but by reading his correspondence, one gets a much closer look at a remarkable man in a very interesting time in our history. The impact of his time abroad on his gardens and on the plants Americans planted in that period are eye opening.

A slightly pear-shaped introduction to VC++.Net

The first thing I noticed about this text is the absence of the familiar colour coding used throughout the other volumes. Could this be a sign of publisher wariness, or simply cost cutting?
The book has much in common (including examples) with the other Deitel and Deitel .Net (C#, VB) volumes. Chapter development and layout is very similar. The standard of the material is mostly very good as one would expect, but topic coverage leaves something to be desired.
Firstly, it's a personal opinion, but I am not convinced that the several hundred pages devoted to web services is what students of C++ (and new professionals) need or want. Consequently, I ask myself whether this space should be shunted into a separate book. Secondly, there is a very small amount of space devoted to data structures, roughly 53 pages. Much smaller than needs be given the overall size of the book. Moreover, the reader only gets to data structures after 1000 pages of text. This apparent underemphasis on data structures raised a variety questions in my mind about the software engineering philosophy of the text. Thirdly, the book explicitly avoids dealing with ActiveX and COM. Attributes, a new feature in Visual C++ are mentioned in passing, and ATL is not mentioned at all.
Overalll, I am less postive about this book than their earlier proramming in C++ text. It seemed to me from reading the book, that there is a formula at play and material is shoehorned to fit accordingly. I fully acknowledge that much of the material is excellent and competently explained, but as an overall learning text on VC++.Net I think improvements are required.

Useful but not quite enough

I found that this book gave me good general information on VC++.NET but not quite enough. When going through the book I tried to write the sample pieces of code as I was going and there was just not quite enough information on each of the samples for me to write it with out having to go and copy the code from the examples. Also it wasn't clear what the project settings should be set to. Eventually I figured them out but it just wasn't quite enough.

I have been a C++/MFC Developer for 6 years and am finding the transition to .NET quite difficult. This book has not been the help that I was hoping for. I know the programming concepts but actually getting the proper syntax to work for simple things is taking quite a bit longer and the book does not have what I need.

Alright could of been better

Much like others have said he spent far too much time on areas in which are less important atleast in my eyes

While this book gives you a basic understanding in VC++ I found that it spent far too much time in the commandline

programing (MC++) when you could teach from the start learning doing it via text boxes/lables which would condence alot of the

reading making it less balky. Over 1/3rd of the book was on MC++ commandline programming! This book was also intended for

college courses and answers to the questions are not answered for those of us learning on our own which is a real downside

and made me skip ALOT of the questions at the end of chapters.

This book doesn't get into real detail about data structors which is an important aspect of programming in general which made me disapointed..

All in all I feel this book is alright but I'm sure theres better out there.

About the Author
Known as the "Doctor of Dimensioning," Alex Krulikowski is a noted educator, author, consultant, and expert on geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). As a design manager with one of the world's largest manufacturing corporations, he gained more than thirty years of industrial experience putting GD&T to practical use on the shop floor. Alex Krulikowski has a degree in industrial vocational education from Eastern Michigan University and has taught GD&T to tens of thousands through his workshops and seminars, and to countless others through his books, self-study courses, videos, and computer-based training programs. He is a member of the following organizations: National and International Committees on Dimensioning and Tolerancing. The Society of Manufacturing Engineers. The Society of Automotive Engineers. The American Society for Quality Control. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASME Y14.5 Committee on Dimensioning and Tolerancing ASME Y14.41 Committee on Solid Model Tolerancing (past chairman) ISO/TC 213-US TAG. great geometric design engineering textbook!

Bought this for my genius husband, as I'm no geometric design engineer. I wouldn't even understand or have interest in this type of text book. He said it was a good guide with plenty of current (at the time he read) technology and industry jargon.

This book is excellent. It uses direct, concise statements and visual examples. Every young engineer should be acquainted with this subject, is a shame many machinist don't like to read GD&T, it truly allow for greater tolerance in the parts.
