Great easy reading book!!!!

After seeing "Beaches" and reading it, it only came to reason to read the sequel. And, boy, was it good!!! Anyone who saw the movie has to read the books!!!! They will make you laugh and cry, and you can just picture Cee Cee standing on the beach, hands on her hips with a nasty look on her face! Trust me, you pick one of these books up, you'll read it from start to finish!

I thought that I'll Be There was an exelent book. It made me laugh and cry, as well as feel emotions that I have never felt before. The book was easy to read. Even non-readers should love it and be able to slip into the story line in no time. I hope all of Iris Rainer Dart's books are as good as this one was.

Fuzy poorly scanned images of figures, diagrams, tables and charts.

Text is okay, but if you want to use or refer to any of the figures, diagrams, tables or charts, beware they are fuzy poorly scanned images and are not very useful. If you are an engineer, buy a hard copy. I tried to do the ecologically responsible thing by purchasing this in electronic format. Wish I had bought the hard copy instead. Hope someone finds this useful.

Great overview of geosynthetics in environmental and civil applications

Great explanation of the geosynthetics manufacturing, testing, properties, standards, design, installation and quality control. Can be used as a college textbook or a resource for industry professionals. The style of writing makes for a good reading experience. Unfortunately the Kindle version does not do a good job with the many charts and tables so you will want to have a hardcopy for making sense of the tables.

In terms of how amazon delivered the product, I bought the Kindle edition and it's not useful for technical purposes. I think an actual pdf format provided by the publisher would be really good. The content however, is really great. Definitely one of the best reference books for geosynthetics.

For the purpose of this paper, the term
"ship" is used to denote a vehicle em-ployed
to transport goods and persons
from one point to another over water.
Ship propulsion normally occurs with
the help of a propeller, which is the
term most widely used in English,
although the word "screw" is some-times
seen, inter alia in combinations
such as a "twin-screw" propulsion plant.
Today, the primary source of propeller
power is the diesel engine, and the power
requirement and rate of revolution very
much depend on the ship's hull form
and the propeller design. Therefore, in
order to arrive at a solution that is as
optimal as possible, some general
knowledge is essential as to the princi-pal
ship and diesel engine parameters
that influence the propulsion system.
This paper will, in particular, attempt to
explain some of the most elementary
terms used regarding ship types,
ship's dimensions and hull forms and
clarify some of the parameters pertain-ing
to hull resistance, propeller condi-tions
and the diesel engine's load
diagram.
On the other hand, it is considered be-yond
the scope of this publication to
give an explanation of how propulsion
calculations as such are carried out, as
the calculation procedure is extremely
complex. The reader is referred to This paper is divided into three chapters
which, in principle, may be considered as
three separate papers but which also,
with advantage, may be read in close
connection to each other. Therefore,
some important information mentioned in
one chapter may well appear in another
chapter, too.
Chapter 1, describes the most elemen-tary
terms used to define ship sizes
and hull forms such as, for example,
the ship's displacement, deadweight,
design draught, length between per-pendiculars,
block coefficient, etc.
Other ship terms described include the
effective towing resistance, consisting
of frictional, residual and air resistance,
and the influence of these resistances
in service.
Chapter 2, deals with ship propulsion
and the flow conditions around the pro-peller(
s). In this connection, the wake
fraction coefficient and thrust deduc-tion
coefficient, etc. are mentioned.
The total power needed for the propel-ler
is found based on the above effec-tive
towing resistance and various
propeller and hull dependent efficien-cies
which are also described. A sum-mary
of the propulsion theory is shown
in Fig. 6.
The operating conditions of a propeller

types of extra resistance, like fouling,
heavy sea against, etc.
Chapter 3, elucidates the importance
of choosing the correct specified MCR
and optimising point of the main engine,
and thereby the engine's load diagram
in consideration to the propeller's design

by means of several examples. Fig. 24
shows, for a ship with fixed pitch pro-peller,

Peter MacIntyre lives and works in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Solid PHP Guide

While not an important part of the book itself-the foreword was one of the best I have read in a technical book. It really describes how many people get started with PHP-it is accessible. This book provides a lot more structure than randomly placing PHP statements that have been googled together. I have not had the chance to review other editions, but it was noted that the material had been updated for the latest features of PHP version 5. With over 500+ pages, this feels like the O'Reilly books from the past that covered a lot of material and feels like a solid reference all around. One example was learning about Traits. While I knew of them from other languages, I had no clue that they were part of PHP until this book since I am only a causal user of the language. Chapter 7 dealing with Web Techniques will probably be immediately useful for someone trying to get a site out quickly. SQLite and MongoDB coverage was welcomed and showed that current updates are indeed included. While of course not complete by any means in scope, Chapter 12 Security was a great introduction to the various security concerns developers need to think about including XSS, filtering input, and session fixation to name a few. One minor complaint was the debugging chapter was very short and did not seem to add that much value to me. I would have liked to see the chapter about extending PHP with C from the 2nd edition, but that subject probably had a limited audience and I understand why it was likely removed.

Overall conclusion: Solid reference and learning guide for PHP. I don't think you could go wrong with "Programming PHP".

Well written for a programming text

I have a bad habit of buying programming books on a whim. That being said, this turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

* The examples are immediately useful. I've already been able to code minor things for work and home in the past 3 days; I've barely used PHP seriously in 10 years.
* Its modern. A lot of books tend to be obsolete by the time they come to print. This book has updated stuff for MySQL + NoSQL; object-oriented behavior; graphics; PDFs; etc. I expect to get much use out of it on some upcoming projects.

More of a reference than an introduction

I wouldn't recommend this book to people with no scripting/programming experience as it dives right in. It feels more like a reference book. The subject matter is more about the language itself rather than using examples on how to use php. It's a decent book for someone who knows how to program and needs a reference on PHP, but if I was a complete novice I'd feel overwhelmed as it assumes previous knowledge/experience in programming fundamentals.

Suspenseful and intriguing

A task force is put together to rescue an American diplomat and his translator in Algeria. The group is led by former Navy SEAL Jake Williams whose main priority is to keep Mya Amari safe. The two are thrown into an even bigger mess of secrets and threats where they literally run for their lives.

You will love the characters in this story and find yourself cheering them on from the very beginning. Its suspenseful and intriguing, you wont want to set the book down.

A little slow but gets better if you stick with it.

When you get a call from your government asking you to help head a task forced to rescue an American Diplomat, you can’t turn it down. However, there’s a little glitch; you are now the personal babysitter for a very head strong and ambitious woman. Jake and Mya are both very strong and independent people and now they must shake that off and work together to save an innocent man and woman from their kidnappers. Can they let go of their dislikes and their prejudice’s to complete the mission?

I have to get this off my chest: I couldn’t get past Mya’s high handed personality. She was draining and annoying. I get tired of women that push themselves and act like they deserve more than they do, acting as if they always have something to prove. In what world does a lawyer have experience with the dangerous terrorist situation that they were going into? She’s with a team, many who are former SEALs and she’s demanding to be in charge? She is always throwing fits and acting like a child not getting what she wants. She’s with professionally trained military men, and she keeps getting upset when Jake doesn’t say please and thank you. He’s there for her protection, not to baby her. I was really hard for me to stick with this book. I did stick with it and it did get a little better, but it wasn’t one of my favorite books to read.

I hate cliffhangers! :-(

I read the book in one sitting because I could not put it down. It's a very captivating story. I would have rated this a five star book had there been just a bit more detail and description. There are parts of the story that skip over the details. I don't just want to be told something, I want it described to me in detail. A lot of erotic/dark romance stories rush through the story. If they would just add more to the story, it would bring the reader in and make them feel like they are a part of the story as an invisible intruder. With all of this being said, I'm going to be waiting impatiently for the next book to be released. DANGER ALERT.

Leonard Susskind is Felix Bloch Professor of Theoretical Physics at Stanford University. He is the Recipient of the J J Sakurai Prize, the Pregel Prize, a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is also Distinguished Professor of Physics at the Korean Institute for Advanced Study and Extraordinary Professor of Physics at the University of Stellenbosch. James Lindesay is Professor of Physics at Howard University.

Easy to understand - very simple, no-nonsense style.

The title of the book reminds me of the classic physics question: yes, this equation can be expanded for small values of the parameter. But before you whip out that expansion, first tell me what "small" means in this context?

I would venture to say that the title of the book is a misnomer on some level. This is a technical book, there's no question about that. If you are not a physicist, you will not understand a single page. When I say "technical", what I specifically mean is you should have:

* A course on general relativity. The first page dumps the Schwarzschild metric on you. You should be familiar with, say, the Faraday tensor (which any decent GR or even SR course should cover).

* A course on quantum field theory. The book very quickly goes into the massless free Klein-Gordon equation in a Schwarzschild background. You should know the basics of string theory. After all, that's what the book is partially about!

* A course on thermo/statistical mechanics. The book delves into black hole entropy. Be prepared to blow the dust off your partition functions.

In that sense, this book is not an introduction, and is CERTAINLY not for the layperson. Now that I've disparaged this book enough, I'll tell you why this is a phenomenal book that deserves a place on your bookshelf (again, for certain values of "you").

This book is a gentle introduction to the classical and quantum mechanical principles of blackholes. It was beautifully written. It may very well be one of my favorite books. When I say "beautiful", I don't mean beautiful like Wald's classic but impenetrable book on GR. Imagine David Griffiths or Matt Visser writing a book for mid-level grad students going into high energy physics. They go deeply into the different coordinates used for blackhole spacetimes and Penrose diagrams, but in a hand-holding way that emphasizes knowing-by-visualization rather than knowing-by-calculation. Yes, the calculations are all there, but the authors are not content with that. They go into the nitty-gritty type of understanding that seems to be absent in most books on this subject.

Which brings me to the next point: diagrams. This book may contain more diagrams than any other comprable book I've seen (except for the behemoth called "Gravitation", but with the case of the telephone book, half the diagrams are wasteful; do we REALLY need to see a picture of firecracker's world line or yet another picture of Newton?). The diagrams are numerous and effective. Kudos. I wish more authors paid as much attention to visualization.

The authors took a very difficult subject and wrote an extremely accessible and well written book on it. If you are a student of high energy physics, or simply want to see someone masterfully write on the subject, this book deserves a place on your bookshelf. Again, for certain values of "you".

I'm still in the process of reading this book, but one fault I can find is that I wish the index was a bit more extensive. However, that's small-fry compared to what makes this book great.

If you want this book: buy the paperback

If you are interested in black holes, but don't have a rock-solid math/physics background, this is NOT your book. Buy Black Holes and Time Warps: Einstein's Outrageous Legacy (Commonwealth Fund Book Program) instead.

If you are a physics student familiar with relativity theory and quantum mechanics, and interested in knowing more about the Bekenstein bound and the intriguing holographic principle, this is YOUR BOOK. However, save yourself some money and buy the paperback edition: An Introduction To Black Holes, Information And The String Theory Revolution: The Holographic Universe (I bought the hardcopy edition, but see below).

There is no other introductory text that goes as deep into holographic theories and entropy bounds as this one. Furthermore the book is well-written, contains clear illustrations, and appeals to the reader's intuition. Would be close to 5 stars, would my copy not have deintegrated (the binding quality is so poor that after some reading the hardcover gets detached from the pages). Hence the above advise to buy this book in paperback edition for well less than half the price.

String Theory Describes Black Holes

This is a real path-breaking study by one of the founders of String Theory and author of "Black Hole Wars," a more historical narrative detailing the debate with Stephen Hawkings about whether information is lost in black holes. This book, in contrast, is less conversational and more like a thin text packed with intellectual diamnods. It is brief and action packed with formulas and simple explanations, a great balance of theory and narrative which very succinctly covers the topics of black holes and how they are described by string theory.

Not like the usual book which is fluffy with no mathematical details, or a heavy textbook that is impossible to follow. The math is light but challenging for a non-physicist. Cool book and very informative. Cutting edge.

Buyer Be Aware!

The other reviews of HONEYMOON IN HELL, appended close-by, refer to an old beloved and long-out-of-print Bantam paperback, containing many noted Fredric Brown sf stories, first issued when Rod Serling helmed Twilight Zone -- the first time around.

This (Galaxy Project) edition of "Honeymoon in Hell" contains only that single Brown novelette. The rest of the brief page count is padded out by boilerplate common to every (Galaxy Project) publication -- how important GALAXY MAGAZINE was in the 1950s, how important the length of the book's single story is, and how important the artist (whose cover image has nothing to do with the story) is. (Such attention to detail!: Despite this edition's Fredric Brown bio, his 1947 first mystery novel was THE FABULOUS CLIPJOINT, not 1950's NIGHT OF THE JABBERWOCK.)

Unique to each (Galaxy Project) is a context-setting introduction by a noted writer/critic of the field to the contained story. "Honeymoon in Hell" has a nice one by Paul Di Filippo.

Be Aware, for the price quoted, you're basically getting only the title novelette and an introduction to it, not the old HONEYMOON IN HELL, with multiple stories, referenced by other reviewers.

My stars are for the story, not for its packaging and presentation.

FYI: Same story is in "2nd FB Megapack"

This is not a review, just a heads-up FYI to inform you this intriguing story is included in Wildside's "Second Fredric Brown Megapack" (for only $.99) where it is one of 27(!) FB tales. SF fans who already own that set should thus be wary of unwittingly repurchasing the very same story in this Galaxy Project edition. The key word is "unwittingly." You may very well wish to deliberately and knowingly purchase this edition because of the informative, supplemental material this single-story edition contains (though if you have previously purchased other titles in this Galaxy series, apart from the introduction to this particular story, much of that is essentially repeated here, too). The choice, of course, is yours, but I would recommend not only the aforementioned 2nd FB Megapack to get this and the 26 other stories, but the First FB Megapack as well to get 33 more (for a grand total of 60 stories) for only $.99 per volume (a mere $1.98 for both sets). That's a far better deal than purchasing this one story alone for $2.99.

Not Brown's Best

Fredric Brown wrote excellent mystery novels (try Night of the Jabberwock, for example), a few good horror stories (the title story in the collection Come And Go Mad and Other Stories is a classic), and a lot of science fiction, a field in which he specialized in what we today call "Flash Fiction"-- very short stories with surprising, often funny endings (several of these are available as free Kindle downloads). This novelette, unfortunately, is not his best. The emphasis on sex was very daring for the 1950s (nothing remotely explicit, mind you, but simply having a story whose plot turns on human reproduction was highly unusual in the SF magazines of the era), and the idea of an external crisis bringing the warring nations of the earth together was still a rather new one then, but today the story seems rather tame, and the surprises are dulled by the fact that many subsequent stories have used similar plot points.

I should emphasize that this is just a novelette (and not even a particularly long one), not a full novel. "The Galaxy Project" is reprinting novelettes and novellas which originally appeared in Galaxy in the 1950s as e-books, padding them with essays on Galaxy, on the story, on the artist who painted the cover, etc. Some of the stories in this series are first rate (Heinlein's The Year of the Jackpot (The Galaxy Project), for example), but this one is not (IMHO, of course).
