Why is this book out of print???????

It never ceases to amaze me how many great books go out of print. This is an excellent book on the basic theory of beams, columns, and cables. It focuses more on theory than on problem solving and is an excellent source of information needed for structural analysis. The only prerequisite material for this book is differential equations and basic strength of materials. The principle of virtual work is used extensively in this book.

About the Author

John J. Schiller is an associate professor of mathematics at Temple University. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. He has published research papers in the areas of Riemann surfaces, discrete mathematics, and mathematical biology. He has also coauthored several other mathematics texts.

R. Alu Srinivasan is a professor of mathematics at Temple University. He received his Ph.D. at Wayne State University and has published extensively in probability and statistics.

The late Murray R. Spiegel was professor and chairman of mathematics at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Hartford Graduate Center, in Troy, New York. During his career, he held positions at Harvard University, Cornell University, and Oak Ridge. He was the author of numerous journal articles and 14 books on various topics in mathematics.

The Book is Great

I like the book and it is great buy. It informs you about many things about Statistics 101. Schaum' s is also a good publishers for many mathematic divisions of study such as Algebra I, II and III; Calcuius I II and III, Geometry I, II and III.

To that end, she prevails upon her mother to bring her to court, where she quickly becomes a hit with the courtiers. Whenever Rose's forwardness gets her into trouble, family friend Christopher "Kit" Martyn steps in to help. Kit, an architect, is struggling to complete three daunting commissions for the king; if he does so, he'll win the post of Deputy Surveyor, which could lead to a knighthood. He quickly falls for Rose, but though she's wildly attracted to him as well, she refuses to consider him because he's a commoner. As Rose kisses her way around the royal court, Kit tries to convince her that he's the only man for her. The breezy energy that usually enlivens Royal's books is lacking here, largely because Rose comes off as shallow and unsympathetic. Royal throws in a transparent mystery regarding some accidents on Kit's building projects, but it does little to increase the book's tension. Diehard fans of Royal's books will complete the trilogy, poor word-of-mouth notwithstanding, but this pallid offering is unlikely to impress those new to her work.

One of my favorite books

This is a great book, definitely worth the money. I love reading, I always check the book section in stores and one day a few years ago, I was looking at the books in dollar tree and came across Rose by Lauren Royal. Obviously because I bought it from Dollar Tree I did not really think it would be that good, but I was pleasantly surprised. The first time I read this book, it took me about 2 days and I could not stop thinking about it. I would literally fall asleep wondering what would happen next. There are few books that I read more than once, but this book is one of those that deserves a second and third read.

i was honestly hoping this book to be good, but as usual, Lauren Royal exceeds my expectations. in the first book, VIOLET, Rose comes out as a selfish, shallow, love-sick romantic. But with each book, she grows. And in ROSE, Rose truly does mature. Of course, she still wants a "titled, rich, good-looking husband" but of course, she must learn the hard way. Each of the "titled, good-looking men" all had to be horrendous kissers, thus leaving her to seek out Kit's mind-blowing kisses. These two are definitely meant for each other. You can't just help but smile/cry/ or say "about dang time" when they do get together.
I found Rose to be a delight. Such wonderful, egnigmatic characters. You can't help but love Duke Trentigham and his "bountiful bother", Chrystabel Ashcroft with her match-making ways... even though her daughters would never rightfully admit that tidbit and all of the extra characters that make this book and Royal's other books such a delight.

Saved the best for last

I loved "Violet" and "Lily" but this is my favorite just because I loved Rose from the other books and couldn't wait to read her story. Rose and Kit are a perfect match even though Rose didn't think so at first. Rose's quest for a kiss that could equal Kit's was hysterical. I have read all of Ms. Royal's books and she's an instant buy from now on.

A cogent description of why we need a change in doctrine and how best to do it.

I saw that all previous reviewers gave this book five stars so I went in looking for a reason to not follow suit. Never found it.

Scott Mann tells us what is wrong regarding the U.S.’s conventional anti-militant strategy and tactics, then provides a tested solution that is adapted to the physical and sociopolitical realities of the remote regions were militants seek safe haven.

The author describes how traditional Afghan rural society is structured and how it functions. He then explains the three decades of externalities to which it was forced to adapt, especially the soviet invasion, the loss of societal continuity, and the incursion of the Taliban, all resulting in traditional society’s inability to provide security for its people.

He further explains that we have been fighting violent extremists in by attempting to extend the central government’s top-down authority into regions where it is not wanted by local people, and where it will not be strong enough to expel militants. He emphasizes that instead we should focus on reestablishing and reinforcing local clan structure and the locally based security that it traditionally provided.

Those who have worked in successful participatory development projects will recognize Mann’s methodological approaches to the recognition and fulfillment of local needs, as well as his emphasis on stability, not just security. They would also be familiar with his emphasis on recognizing, respecting, and including local traditional authority structures, incorporating local decision making processes, and respecting local cultural values.

His well-organized, well-constructed style of writing is mercifully free of both academese and military jargon. The text is extremely well researched. Although the author is himself an expert and go-to resource, he adds to his own experiences the opinions and insights of others who are equally qualified.

Mann thinks long-term and keeps long-term consequences in mind. He emphasizes the need to develop compelling narratives and then reinforce them with corroborating action. The world only listens to a lived truth.

I’m glad that I purchased the hard back edition—I’ll be referring to it often.

Game Changers is a mandatory read for all 18 Series Soldiers

Scott Mann has developed a compelling study on the tactics and techniques used in previous counterinsurgency programs, particularly the Special Forces Civilian Irregular Defense Group (CIDG) program in Vietnam that he and others applied successfully in rural areas of Afghanistan. The book is a absolutely compelling justification to shift from a COIN strategy and utilize Unconventional Warfare and Foreign Internal Defense programs instead. I was interviewed for this study and while obviously biased, this is the best book of this type I have encountered.

He clearly knows what he is talking about, and his solution is the right one for our times.

From reading this book, it's clear that Scott Mann knows what he is talking about. He has been on the front lines...and behind them, and he has seen things I (fortunately) will never have to see. The level of research and experience that he has poured into this book is, frankly, impressive. The documentation alone shows you that he wants to be taken seriously and that he can back up every statement.

This is not some hot shot special forces guy blowing his own horn. This is a man with a passion to change the way we pursue peace.

We need to get this book into the hands of every politician and leader. It is that important.
