None are better than the Supernatural

For the record, I am an absolute, unapologetic, died-in-the-wool Supernatural fan. And I mean FAN! I have all the DVD's for Seasons 1-10. I have several books about Supernatural (most of which I have bought here at Amazon.com). None are better than the Supernatural: The Official Companion books. I have each book from Season 1 to Season 7. They provide a succinct synopsis of each episode along with insights from the actors (not just the two very excellent stars, Jared Padelecki and Jensen Ackles) but even from many of the actors whether in continuing roles or those who appeared for a few or just one episode). There are comments from the various directors, the show's originator, Eric Kripke, the various writers. There are sidebars describing how certain episodes came into being, the difficulties encountered and resolved in filming the many episodes, and some of the mythologies encompassed in Supernatural (and the embellishments given to them by the show's writers). I have waited for Seasons 8, 9 and 10, but they have yet to appear. It may be that there will be no more of these Episode guides but I have read and re-read Seasons 1-7 many times. The books are well worth the price for rabid Supernatural fans like me who want to know everything and anything about this remarkable television series.

SUPERNATURAL - GRAVE DISCOVERIES

For fans of SUPERNATURAL, this series of Official Companion books is exactly what it claims to be: an excellent partner to the shows themselves, sharing with the reader the behind-the-scenes work that goes into the making of this addictive TV show. This fourth volume follows the same formula as the previous three: a synopsis and discussion of every episode, a generous helping of color photos featuring the cast, plenty of black and white photos spread throughout the book, essays on the various monsters that populate the season, discussions about the show's crew, and chapters on the season's main characters (featuring comments by the actors who played them.)

This book is fun to read and author Nicholas Knight does a very good job of bringing context and depth to the material included. It's worth noting that these books do not shy away from the cast, creators, or crew taking a critical view of their work as well as sometimes praising it, which helps to add dimension to the experience of discovering what makes this show tick. You will also find a complete cast listing for every episode.

One word of caution: don't read this book until you've seen the shows. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the fifth volume in the series. The journey of Sam and Dean Winchester continues to be a fascinating one to follow and this book adds additional layers to the paths they traverse. Enjoy!

SUPERNATURAL: THE SECRETS BEHIND THE SHOW

For fans of SUPERNATURAL, this quick read is a certain plus to add to your collection. There are lots of black and white photos of the cast and the assorted creeps they encountered throughout season one. There's also a great color photo section. Each episode is discussed in detail, highlighting both the production successes and failures encountered along the way. Including plenty of insightful quotes from the cast and production staff, this book provides the reader with plenty of answers for those things you might wonder about after watching the show.
My only gripe is that the font is a bit small and at times you find yourself straining to read some of the text and the "Did you know?" items that appear in shaded backgrounds. Even so, a small quibble for what is truly a keepsake and, no doubt, a one-day collector's item.
Delivery by Amazon was very speedy and the books were well packaged to avoid damage.

Best Memory Book/ Best Lorayne Book Ever

I've read HL's other memory books before this, perhaps with insufficient motivation or attention. But, this is the very best book on memory training and surpasses his other books. There are several reasons.

You may be put off by memory "tricks" thinking they don't actually improve memory. But HL shows how memory enhanced by his techniques becomes "true" memory after a while. And the techniques are fun to use and well presented. I have had an especially good time using them to memorize foreign vocabulary. Gradually, for each word or phrase, the technique fades as the true memory takes over and you simply remember the words and phrases as a "normal" memory.

His techniques rely a lot on visualization. But don't despair. If, like me, you are "visualization challenged," meaning you don't visualize clearly or think you don't visualize at all -- you are wrong. Ask yourself which side of the car you get in when you drive. See. You have some visualization (or if you never drive, which side of the bus is the door on?). A really great part of this training is that as you practice, your ability to visualize grows and grows. That is a side benefit which is truly remarkable. I really enjoy that effect; it's like a fountain of youth.

In this book HL says a lot about why we have memory problems in the first place. The main reason is that we do not pay attention to what we see and do. Much of his technique is to ensure that we do that first. In fact that may explain why memory seems to become harder as we age. As children we see everything as new and interesting. Past the age of 60 we may see them as less so, and sort of tune out. HL certainly has the antidote for this.

Another reason I love this book is that it is written better and more interestingly than his previous ones. The material is presented in more digestible and useful doses interspersed with interesting mind games. Someone here said that these techniques beat "Lumosity" exercises. I don't know about that, but this book keeps the brain engaged and the neurons firing. Recent research in neuroplasticity suggests that this actually encourages growth in brain cell connections and mental effectiveness. Based on my experience with the exercises and practices set forth in this book I don't doubt it at all.

I especially liked HL's statements about why these techniques work and the focus on their practical use.

If you want to improve your memory, and mental effectiveness in general, REMEMBER to buy this book.

Great collection of techniques

Harry Lorayne has been doing this business for a few decades now, and it shows somewhat. If you have any of his other writings, the subject of the book might be slightly familiar. His techniques haven't really changed at all, but he has gotten older and as such seems to be targeting senior citizens in this book. Along with his techniques, Lorayne includes some brain teasers and a brief history of trained memories, which I happen to have some familiarity with. I read The Art of Memory by Frances Yates so I do know about some of the old tomes and how it was treated back in the Renaissance and so on. All in all, if your memory is starting to go, you don't really have anything more to lose.

You're never too old jump-start your memory

I am 62 years old, and have had trouble remembering names for quite awhile. I'd also occasionally forget to get something done in a timely manner, creating problems from time to time. When I spotted this book, I recalled seeing Harry Lorayne on the Tonight Show years ago, demonstrating what to this day stands as one of the most amazing things I'd ever seen. Here's what happened:

Johnny asked Harry what he was going to demonstrate that evening, and Harry said that he was going to introduce Johnny to his audience. He explained that before the show, as people entered the studio, he shook hands with them and introduced himself, and heard their names - a 10-second encounter. The audience of several hundred people then entered and sat at random in the theater.

After explaining this to Johnny, Harry asked for the house lights to be brought up, illuminating the audience. He then asked everyone in the audience to stand up, but then to sit down as he called their names. He further added that he was going to give $1,000 to anyone that he could not name. Guess what: He named everyone, rapid-fire, no hesitation. Incredible.

I've not only learned how to remember names (I can tell you the name of the waitress who served my wife and me dinner three weeks ago), I can remember task lists of up to 100 items. It just requires practice and patience - read a chapter a few days and implement what you've learned. You'll be amazed at your progress, and where you'll stand after about a month or two of using Harry's techniques.

I recommend this book to anyone - any age - who wants to improve their memory.

This volume is written jointly by Witold Marciszewski, who contributed the introductory and the three subsequent chapters, and Roman Murawski who is the author of the next ones - those concerned with the 19th century and the modern inquiries into formalization, algebraization and mechanization of reasonings. Besides the authors there are other persons, as well as institutions, to whom the book owes its coming into being.The study which resulted in this volume was carried out in the Historical Section of the research project Logical Systems and Algorithms for Automatic Testing of Reasoning, 1986-1990, in which participated nine Polish universities; the project was coordinated by the Department of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science of the Bialystok Branch of the University of Warsaw, and supported by the Ministry of Education (some of its results are reported in (Srzednicki (Ed.) 1987). The major part of the project was focussed on the software for computer-aided theorem proving called Mizar MSE (Multi-Sorted first-order logic with Equality, reported in (Marciszewski 1994a)) due to Dr. Andrzej Trybulec. He and other colleagues deserve a grateful mention for a hands-on experience and theoretical stimulants owed to their collaboration.

Great floor plans

Huge amount of information and visual detail. Great floor plans. Some unfortunate language about non-Western, non-modern cultures. And this is not a picture book--the text is very informative but also mandatory because the drawings are labeled in the original language for types of room and the terms are only defined in the text.

Fascinating!

This fascinating book presents the history of housing from huts to neo-traditional buildings of the 1990's. Though the architectural point of view dominates, there are ample references to anthropology, sociology and general history. The author's passion and intimate knowledge of the topic transpire throughout.

The work is generously illustrated, entirely with the author's own sketches. In particular, it is chock-full with floor plans of the buildings discussed, what makes it even more interesting.

Though often more descriptive than analytical, this book is highly recommended to anyone interested in the evolution of our built environment.

A passionate work

You don't need a lot of background in architecture to appreciate this wonderful book. Professor Schoenauer, who was emeritus professor of architecture at McGill University until his death in 2001, takes us on a guided tour of a huge number of different housing styles over a great expanse of time and in highly varied cultural contexts. He really makes you feel as if he has personally inspected all of the places he describes (though it hardly seems possible that anyone could have) and he does this without overburdening his reader with too many technical terms or requiring us to have a very profound understanding of why houses stand up. Perhaps what really makes the book alive is the author's own drawings--something like more than 500 line drawings of floor plans, cross-sections, elevation views, city plans, etc, etc, etc.

The book is divided into three major sections: The Pre-Urban House, the Oriental Urban House, and the Occidental Urban House. The first section divides housing into types by socio-economic/cultural organization which the author suggests is more or less evolutionary (though these types may be found simultaneously though distributed in space). The second section examines a very long span of time (but including in some cases the present) with detailed discussions of typical house designs in various periods in Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, China, and Islamic cultures. The final section is an historical treatment of developments in the West: the Dark Ages, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the 19th century, and the 20th century are all treated in turn.

Now something about the style of the book. At first, I was a bit distracted by Professor Shoenauer's digressions on culture, anthropology, historical sidelights, etc., but after a bit I started looking forward to these as much as learning about the buildings themselves. Admittedly, he doesn't always use the most recent or varied sources for his historical treatments (for instance, his sections on the dissolution of the Roman Empire could, in my opinion, be improved). And yet, by buying this book you are obviously reading someone's life work--and life passion--someone who is really overflowing with ideas, committment, scholarship, and who has an incredibly detailed and varied knowledge of his subject.

Great read, but questionable facts

This is an eminently readable book, and one you may not be able to put down -- I know I couldn't! But when I finished, I felt slightly let down. Steiger brings forth a number of interesting theories, but fails to back them up with "facts". He puts forth Alfred Bielek's fantastic story, but nothing to corroborate that story. Statements are set down as "fact," but there's no backup for them. If you're looking for a definitive book on the Philadelphia Experiment, this ain't it. But if you're looking for a book that will put forth some interesting theories on UFOs and that will make you look at them in a new light, then this is the book for you. It's definitely worth a read!

About 20 % Good Material - 80 % Filler

This book has it's good points but veers too far away from the subject of the title. It contains things like:

-was Noah's arc a flying saucer
-are there people living under the earth
-who were the original people who lived in Atlantis.

These things are interesting but have absolutely nothing to do with UFO conspiracies.

The book jumps all over the place with stories about things like some guy who was enslaved in a cave in some desert somewhere by devils.

The book has some value mainly for the sparce input provided by Al Bielek. The experiences of Bielek related to the Philadelphia Experiment affected him deep within his soul. He disappeared and his wife and child never found out what happened to him. So much for the government's concern for those who participate in such dangerous activities.

Some of the things Bielek says are very thought provoking but you won't find any good expansion of those topics here.

Another problem is people try to speculate about the intentions of these weird alien creatures who impregnate females to create hybrid life forms. They are evil. That much is obvious. They are just one form of an evil force that can take any form.

Who do you believe?

I picked this book up nearly 10 years ago, and since then, it's been one of those books I like to scan through at least once a year. Brad Steiger has always been one of my favorite authors for those subjects that lie on the edge. I'd have to call this one a classic.

The overall problem with this entry lies in the believability of the co-autor, Al Bielek. Would you beleive someone who claims to have been age-regressed by some government agency, and tells the tale through a second identity? I'm not going to say it's completely impossible, yet it seems in all rationality, highly improbable. Al claims that he was a sailor on the Eldrige when the imfamous "Philidelphia Experiment" took place; an experiment with electro-magnetic energy that was supposed to act like the cloaking device from Star Trek (though more than 20 years before the Star Trek series was ever conceived), but instead, ripped open a dimentional portal. I have my own beliefs on this subject, but the way Al Bielek spins the tale, I just have to discount Al's version.

What I do enjoy about this book, however, are Brad's seperate stories in the last 1/3rd of the book. Strange tales about beings from middle Earth (the Dero) who have abduted humans, as well as strange places and wierd occrances. The second 1/3 of the book is almost like "The Best of FATE Magazine".

Truthfull or not, this book is a very interesting read. Depending on weather or not you believe the tale of Al Bielek, you ought to have plenty of fun with this title. Serious reserchers, you probably ought to stay clear of the first 2/3ds, unless you are reading it for fun. To the rest of you who read these subjects for fun or intrest, this entry will take you on one hell of a ride. 4 1/2 stars for Brad; Al, well...I'll allow the rest of you to pass judgement.

Stunning start - does not disappoint

A stunning and nightmare-inducing start. Good sub-plots. What's not to like? Every time you think "aha, just another Kathy Reichs novel," you get stuck in, and the word "just" gets dropped? Although not an adventure thriller as such, it is definitely a pageturner and the plot threads are skilfully interwoven. Tempe herself gets attacked repeatedly; not just in the d�nouement, and the cities of Charlotte and Qu�bec become increasingly real in the reader's mind.

Chaotic humour, superbly controlled.

Classic humour wrapped in satire that picks apart, if not actually explains, the Italian conflict between church and state, humanism and communism and just general chaotic, yet superbly controlled, mayhem when ideologies and egos crash headlong into each other. You will love Don Camillo and his nemesis Peppone!

The Book for Getting Your Amateur Radio General Class License

I agree with David F 's review. I am fairly new to amateur radio and also recently received my (first level) Technician's license. I do not have a background in radio or electronics but was interested in moving up to the (second level) General license.

This ARRL book, like the Technican's book, provides the information needed to pass the current FCC General exam (always choose the latest edition for current exam information), along with every question on the exam and the correct answers. Technical information is provided in relatively small chunks, in a manner that is fairly easy to learn and understand.

Due to the contents of the exam, some of the material is quite technical and some (such as which frequencies are assigned for specific uses) simply must be memorized. But the book does try and explain other exam material (such as circuits, components, antennas, etc.) and gives examples.

Again, this book will not teach you everything about ham radio but will help you pass the FCC General license test. It can be used as a self study guide for someone with a technical background, or together with a course taught by a local radio club to really learn the material.

The only book you will need

I just passed the General test using only this book and an exam site online. Same question pool but it was just easier to read the questions online instead of flipping through the book.

Read the book cover to cover. Stop and answer the questions when prompted. Don't move on until you understand the material. Review the question pool over and over. Done.

Please don't just memorize the questions in the book and take the test. You are just hurting yourself and other Ham's who understand the hobby. But I digress...

This book covers every topic necessary to pass the test. The is the second tier of Ham license and the book does expect you to know the basics of amateur radio as well as have a good grasp of basic electronics and electronic theory. It hits heavily on radio wave propagation, electric principles, circuit components and antennas. The intent in my opinion is to really make sure you won't screw up once you start hitting HF bands and start using the higher end equipment.

Buying this for the test is a no-brainer.

The test was much harder than the Technician test but if you study and understand the material presented in the book you will pass easily.
