The Anticancer Diet: Reduce Cancer Risk Through the Foods You Eat, by David Khayat MD

With the huge number of studies on nutrition and cancer available, it's impossible for a person to sort through them all to come up with practical recommendations. Now, Dr. David Khayat, a world-renowned oncologist, has done that hard work for you.

In this international bestseller, Dr. Khayat provides easy-to-follow―and often surprising―guidelines on what are now known to be the foods most likely to reduce the risk of cancer. For those of a scientific bent, he explains what cancer is and how it develops. Bringing together his own research with that of other major cancer specialists, he breaks down what the studies mean, which ones provide the most solid evidence, and how to use their results in your and your family’s diet.

Structured by the major food groups―as well as supplements, beverages, and exercise―The Anticancer Diet may surprise you by not disparaging red meat but alerting you to find out the source of your fish and suggesting sole over salmon. While highly recommending commercial pomegranate juice, it cautions people with fair hair and eyes against drinking orange juice. What stage of life a person is at will also affect what they should consume. Pregnant women, older women, men, and children may process foods differently.

With numerous easy-to-read charts and tables along with a comprehensive food list at the back of the book, this accessible, user-friendly guide helps readers realize the power in their everyday choices.

With some tweaks, it'd be an ideal diet reference
By M. L Lamendola
For the typical American on the typical "let's get sick" diet, this book is a "must read." But it's not, despite the author's best intentions, 100% correct. With a few adjustments, however, it becomes an ideal reference. Dr. Khayat's writing style is highly accessible, and he makes every effort to be clear. His honesty and integrity are also important to him, and this shows in his writing.

Dr. Khayat brings a mix of sound nutritional advice and poor nutritional advice, in this book. For example, he is adamant about drinking a particular fruit juice. Ask an endocrinologist about that; these experts on what happens when you rapidly ingest sugar in liquid form won't even debate any alleged health benefits from fruit juice. They say don't touch the stuff, no matter what it might hold in health benefits because those will cost you in other, serious health deficits.

He advocates drinking cow's milk (except for men over 50). He is apparently unaware that the factory farmed cows who produce this milk all have mastitis. They are given antibiotics for this, which you drink in the milk along with the pus their infected mammaries pass into the milk. There are many reasons to not drink milk (other than organic milk). In his defense, things are done differently in France where his nutritionist resides.

I'm not a doctor of any sort, but I haven't been sick since 1971 despite having an immune disorder from birth (cured in my 50s, after my own research and blood tests confirm this). The difference is that at a very early age I took "you are what you eat" very seriously. That has really paid off.

Among his sound nutritional advice Dr. Khayat is very big on turmeric. He even mentioned combining it with pepper, something that multiplies (not merely adds) the cancer-killing effects of both spices. He did not mention that not only can you add ground turmeric to foods (which I do), but you can also consume turmeric capsules (which I do). He did mention to add it to "everything," which is good advice because if you're eating six meals a day you can intake turmeric six times (if you're eating only three meals a day, you need to assess your eating habits).

Generally where he's right is in his advocacy of eating many different fruits and vegetables and taking care how you prepare your foods. Generally where he's wrong is his misunderstanding of the frankengrains and their pernicious effects on health in general. If you combine this book with an authoritative book (or documentary) on the poisons we call "wheat" (it's not really wheat) and "corn" today, plus avoid fruit juices, you'll greatly reduce your cancer risk. Far, far more than he claims is possible.

And that brings me to another point. He gives great advice, except as noted. But he goes on, late in the book, to minimize the cancer-fighting effects of a sensible diet. He says a 50% reduction in cancer risk from food choices alone is absurd. He's wrong about that.

Here's why. About the only thing within your control is what you put into your mouth. You can not only reduce your self-inflicted risks to zero by eliminating toxic "food" from your diet, you can use real food to reduce risks that come from other sources.

If you look at the threshold a given cocktails of risks must add up to for the total risk to become serious, it's well above zero. We can all agree on that. The exact number varies by individual.

It depends upon your genetics, what's in your air and water, how you handle stress, what you wash your clothes in, and many other variables. It's the risk above this threshold that matters. If your threshold is 80% and diet accounts for 30% of risk, guess what? You can reduce your cancer risk to zero. It will remain zero until your threshold changes or some other risk factor increases so much your diet accounts for less than 20% (or some combination of the two).

We know there's a threshold, because in a given population in a given location most risk factors are identical. Some people get cancer, some don't. Only genetics and personal choices (in food, household cleaners, fabrics worn, etc.) can account for the difference. The people who don't get cancer might all have superior genetics to those who don't, but that is truly stretching things to say that's the reason. Personal choices must be at play, and common sense tells us that food is the most important of these choices (you are made of the food you eat).

Also, go to the grocery store and try this experiment. First, understand that how a body looks on the outside tells you a great deal about how well it's working on the inside. We gage this all the time; the ability to gage this is wired into our genes.

Step 1. Look for fat people (it won't be hard to find them). Then look in their shopping carts. You will invariably find most of what they are buying is a processed wheat product and you are unlikely to see any vegetables other than iceberg lettuce. They'll have sodas and nearly everything they buy comes in a can (Dr. Khayat also gives canned vegetables kudos, which is wrong unless you don't mind eating lead and aluminum), bottle, box, or other container. Common health advice is "read the label" but if it comes in something with a label on it, that's your first clue it's probably unsafe to eat.

Step 2. OK, now that you see how fat people eat, look for people with beautiful bodies and nice skin. The woman whose figure does Spandex proud or the guy whose chest is 14 inches bigger around than his waist. What is in their carts? Almost NOTHING that you find in the fat people carts. What you see in their carts came mostly from the produce aisle. And they have traditional oats instead of instant oats, no sodas, no snack cakes, etc.

Step 3. Go visit the produce aisle, and look at the people shopping there. Then go look at the people shopping in the snack aisle where the chips and soda are. This also speaks volumes on the "does food matter very much" non-question. It does matter. You are what you eat.

Dr. Khayat is highly credentialed. After having been suitably impressed by his Preface, I had higher hopes for this book. I think he needs to revise it, after carefully re-reading his own statement in the Introduction: "The truth is that our eating habits, in the broadest sense, are in fact responsible for many of the cancers we get!"

Exactly. And he should have hammered this point repeatedly instead of telling us at the end it hardly matters. Perhaps he "dialed down" expectations in response to the idiots and psychopaths who peddle hope with crazy diets, worthless (or even harmful) supplements (there are good supplements, too), and "treatments" that have no effect or that amount to slow torture.

He's correct that eating sensibly does not provide iron-clad protection; something can always enter the picture to change the normal equation such that your food can't balance it anymore. But to say that eating sensibly is going to give you only a little protection is grossly mistaken.

In a sense, his conclusion is correct because of the fact that (as he pointed out) cancers take a long time to grow from one single defective cell into a dangerous tumor. So if you have been eating from the snack and soda aisle for twenty years and then suddenly decide to eat sensibly you aren't going to be at 100% risk reduction in terms of getting a tumor. You've done the "cancer cell growing" thing for many years. It will take many more years before the results of that fade into nothing. But that is no reason not to start today. In fact, it makes starting today even more urgent.

Here is my suggestion for what to do with this book. First, buy and read the book. But remember that fruit juice is out, along with wheat products. Next, go through your pantry and refrigerator and toss out anything that's processed. Don't give it away to the poor; it's poison, so toss it. Chips, soda, beer, pizza, any "instant" foods, anything that's processed. If you have nothing left after this, that means you've been growing cancer cells and ingesting toxins that affect you in other ways than cancer risk.

Next, go to the grocery store and shop only in the produce aisle. After you get what you want, pick up whole grain rice and some dry beans (for the protein you'll need). Also buy several dozen eggs (Dr. Khayat recommends eggs, and he is quite right to do so). Buy any spices you want, making sure to buy plenty of turmeric. Eat only these foods for several months; for beverages, only green tea, coffee, or water. After you've given your body a few months of this, then re-read this book and see what foods you want to add into your diet. Given what's available on this "strict" regimen, you might not want to add anything. But this book is a great guide if you do (just no fruit juices or frankengrains).

The bottom line is you need to control and reduce as many risk factors as you can. It is possible to make "all good" food choices; I know, because I have been doing that for decades. It's not hard at all.

Making good food choices will just about eliminate your chances of getting any disease, including cancer. Doing that also has a very positive effect on your appearance. And there is also something to be said for enjoying the thousands of fantastic flavors in real food rather than limiting yourself to the two dominant flavors in the typical American diet: processed grain (sugars) and rancid fats.

The text runs 193 pages. There's a useful appendix that lists foods with their anti-cancer benefits or risks, followed by a glossary and a list of abbreviations. This book is well-researched; in addition to the subject matter experts who contributed, it has 29 pages of notes. These are followed by an extensive index. The index is followed by a 21-page resource called "Your Anti-Cancer Checklist."

Read with a fact checker
By Scott Rae
This would not be my first choice as an anti-cancer diet book. That choice would be Richard Beliveau's FOODS TO FIGHT CANCER. Beliveau's work is studying food compounds that show ant-cancer activity. His book has information that Khayat's doesn' t such as how long to brew green tea to maximize the extraction of catechins ( 10 minutes is much better than 3 minutes). Also, some green teas have much more EGCG than others. Beliveau lists them.. Beliveau says that there is a synergistic effect between EGCG and curcumin -- another anti-cancer food.

When is comes to broccoli Beliveau tells how sulforaphane is created when broccoli is chewed or lightly cooked (sulforaphane is destroyed by normal cooking). Beliveau also states that broccoli sprouts contain as much as 100 times as much sulforaphane as mature broccoli. BTW, broccoli sprouts are fairly easy to grow in an EasySrouter(TM) available along with broccoli seed from the Sprout People. My favorite book on sprouting is GARDENS AT OUR FINGERTIPS by Gene Monson available from Sproutamo. I mention this because there is currently a clinincal trial looking at sulforaphane and cancer. Also, there is another synergistic effect between sulforaphane and lycopene which is available from cooked tomatoes. Khayat doesn't mention these facts either.

Khayat does cover some topics that Beliveau doesn't such as drinking water and sweeteners. Beliveau's book was written before the pomegranate became an anti-cancer darling for some such as Khayat who says it is great -- drink as much pomegranate juice as you would like. I think the jury is still out on pomegranate. One problem with pomegranate juice is that it has a lot of sugar -- 36 grams in 8 ounces (about 240 ml). But, from the way Khayat writes he sees nothing wrong with sugar. Others point out that cancers need glucose to grow.

I'm not sure if Khayat is cherry picking the studies he chooses to cite or not. He is set against fasting for instance (in fairness to Khayat it is not standard care), but if you do an internet search on "fasting chemotherapy" or "fasting and cancer" you can find articles saying that fasting seems to improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation and can decrease some of the side effect of chemotherapy.

Khayat is an interesting read. I am now glad that my daughter doesn't drink the tap water in San Diego, CA.

A Book About Cancer, Not Just Diet.
By George Steeg
"The Anti-cancer Diet" is much more than a diet book. About the first third is a primer on cancer and what we know about its causes. It concludes with discussions of the risks and benefits associated with common food groups. The second third covers cooking methods, supplements, activities and anti-cancer advice. The final third contains useful food tables, glossary, references, index, and a convenient tabular summary of the content in the first two-thirds.
Anyone looking for one book about cancer that emphasizes life-style risks and benefits including food choices, should own and read this book. Smokers must take a deep breath, buy the book, and take Khayat's advice: STOP SMOKING!
Full Disclosure: I'm not a patient. I've been a primary caregiver for two wives and for more than two decades. One wife succumbed to a rare cancer (less than U.S. 20,000 cases/year, no effective chemotherapy). My current wife has dodged three cancer bullets with surgery; the last one also rare. We're waiting and watching for aftermath of bullet #3.
The subject diet book by Khayat, and the recipe book "Cooking through Cancer" bought at the same time are my first cancer books. They came to our attention in reviews in The Washington Post. Before these books I learned about cancer from our doctors, from Internet resources going back to the bulletin-boards before chat rooms and social media, from local support groups and from medical-institution publications. I'm not a medical professional; I'm an engineer.

The Cold War and the United States Information Agency: American Propaganda and Public Diplomacy, 1945-1989, by Nicholas J. Cull

Published at a time when the U.S. government's public diplomacy is in crisis, this book provides an exhaustive account of how it used to be done. The United States Information Agency was created in 1953 to "tell America's story to the world" and, by engaging with the world through international information, broadcasting, culture and exchange programs, became an essential element of American foreign policy during the Cold War. Based on newly declassified archives and more than 100 interviews with veterans of public diplomacy, from the Truman administration to the fall of the Berlin Wall, Nicholas J. Cull relates both the achievements and the endemic flaws of American public diplomacy in this period. Major topics include the process by which the Truman and Eisenhower administrations built a massive overseas propaganda operation; the struggle of the Voice of America radio to base its output on journalistic truth; the challenge of presenting Civil Rights, the Vietnam War, and Watergate to the world; and the climactic confrontation with the Soviet Union in the 1980s. This study offers remarkable and new insights into the Cold War era.

Review
"At a time when public diplomacy is more important than ever before, Nick Cull has provided a comprehensive examination that should be of great value to professionals, scholars, and concerned citizens. Thoroughly researched and clearly organized, the book illuminates the evolution of public diplomacy in the United States during the Cold War, highlights successes and failures, and suggests lessons for the future."
-Melvyn P. Leffler, Stettinius Professor of American History, University of Virginia

"American soft power has recently been in decline, yet we used public diplomacy as a key instrument of soft power during the Cold War decades. This important book tells the story of how we did it, and what we need to do it again."
-Joseph S. Nye, Jr., University Distinguished Service Professor, Harvard, and author of The Powers to Lead

"Although U.S. capabilities in public diplomacy have withered over the past decade, The Cold War and the United States Information Agency suggests the importance of examining the lessons that might be learned from earlier successes and failures of 'soft power.' Drawing on prodigious archival research and engagingly written, Cull presents the first comprehensive history and assessment of the varied elements that comprised the USIA's mission to tell "America's story to the world." He consistently weaves insightful analysis into an engrossing and timely narrative."
-Emily S. Rosenberg, University of California, Irvine

"In The Cold War and the United States Information Agency, Nick Cull has written the definitive history of U.S. public diplomacy. It is a masterwork, meticulously researched and engagingly written, and should be required reading for anyone who cares about U.S. foreign policy."
-Kristin M. Lord Associate Dean, Elliot School of International Relations, The George Washington University

"Nicholas Cull's comprehensive history of USIA begins by clarifying what is meant by "public diplomacy." This is a great service, because since 9/11 every committee, think tank, advisory board and broom closet in Washington has published a report on the topic... none cuts through the semantic muddle as deftly as Mr. Cull."
-Martha Bayles, Wall Street Journal

"This work by Cull (public diplomacy, U. of Southern California) is a Cold War history of the United States Information Agency, privileging the high politics of public diplomacy and political appointees over the work of career veterans in the bureaucracy and in the field." -Reference & Research Book News

"Nicholas Cull...has written a well-researched, comprehensive book on the history of the US Information Agency (USIA). It is the first, and so far only, work that relies heavily on documentary sources rather than the personal recollections of a former USIA officer. It is unique, and scholars as well as practitioners of public diplomacy will want to read this insightful and well-written book...." -Walter R. Roberts, Mediterranean Quarterly

"Exhaustively researched, lucidly written with an obvious enthusiasm for the subject, The Cold War and the US Information Agency deserves to become a standard text of public diplomacy." -Lawrence Raw, Journal of Popular Culture

"Cull's masterful history will be the gold standard in scholarship on USIA." -Bruce Gregory, Naval War College Review

"Highly recommended." -Choice

"Cull's prodigious research, clear writing, and sweeping scope are quite impressive." -Laura A. Belmonte, H-Diplo Roundtable Reviews

"...a volume crammed with local color and colorful characters that moves along at a jaunty clip. For readers seeking a compendious account of the USIA's fitful rise and precipitous demise this study will provide invaluable: a definitive institutional history, exhaustive in its coverage of bureaucratic maneuverings, missions espoused, and mandates reversed." -Susan L. Carruthers, H-Diplo Roundtable Reviews

"This is an authoritative study. The research that went into it bumps the needle up to somewhere between 'thorough' and 'extreme.'" -Richard Freid, H-Diplo Roundtable Reviews

"...Cull offers an insightful conclusion to his work, summarizing not only the successes and failures of the USIA but also drawing interesting and sometimes controversial conclusions of his own about the future of public diplomacy in America's foreign relations." -Michael L. Krenn, H-Diplo Roundtable Reviews

"Nicholas Cull's magisterial history of the USIA is...a sorely needed account that fills a colossal gap in the historical literature. Scholars all too casually use the word 'prodigious' to describe the research of books they review, but Cull's book truly matches this description." -Kenneth Osgood, H-Diplo Roundtable Reviews

American Public Diplomacy in the Cold War
By Dr. Laurence Raw
Published at a time when American public diplomacy was in crisis due to cuts in the State Department budget, Nick Cull's exhaustively researched history of the USIA - US Information Agency - looks at how the organization was used to disseminate values such as democracy and free speech during the Cold War era. The organization was preoccupied with cultural diplomacy, bringing over artists from various disciplines to countries perceived as being most 'at risk' from communist ideological infiltration. In the days of the Internet, such strategies now look a little old-fashioned, but Cull's highly original book captures the flavor of an era when cultural diplomacy was seen as vital to the national interest.

Extremely well researched and written. It shines a spotlight on the loss of a national treasure in telling America's story to the world. A must read for anyone who is interested in getting back to the basics of influence.

Short Story for Dom Fans
By J. Forrest
Some reviewers found this offensive, and I suppose I can understand that . . . but it seems to me one does not buy and read this sort of story unless one knows what one is getting. The suggestion that this is about rape is absurd. It is what it is--a dominant older guy and a submissive younger guy. Not great literature, but a tale, of its type, well enough told.

New Birth or Rebirth?: Jesus Talks with Krishna (Great Conversations), by Ravi Zacharias

Ultimate truth. The destiny of souls. The individual heart. Can Krishna and Jesus agree on anything?

This is what Subramaniam, a real-life Hindu of the twentieth century, wonders as he enters a fictitious conversation between two religious figures who have changed the lives of millions. As Jesus and Krishna respond to each other’s view of life and the afterlife, they speak words straight from the texts of Christianity and Hinduism and straight into the soul.

Subramaniam asks Jesus and Krishna hard questions about faith. Meanwhile, a fictional character, Richard, eavesdrops, asking himself the most important question of all:

Does it really matter what I believe?

Krishna is revered by millions of people worldwide, and writing on any figure honored that greatly is difficult.

But I am doing so because the one notion that all religions subscribe to (either explicitly or implicitly) is the notion of exclusive truth. Populists like to deny that premise, but all religions either make this claim or try to covertly smuggle it in.

The question, therefore, is not whether one enjoys a discussion like the one that follows in this book but whether the arguments are fairly presented. That is much harder to do, especially where length is limited. I have, therefore, selected to write about what I consider to be the greatest differences between Jesus and Krishna.

As always, putting words into the mouths of historic figures is a challenge. I have done my best to take ideas straight from what has already been quoted in each faith’s sacred texts and put them into context here.

Hinduism is a complex belief system. At times the following conversation will become quite philosophical and intricate. Please be patient as we work through these areas of belief so that the truth and beauty of Christ’s gospel is fairly presented against the backdrop of Hinduism’s complexity. To present either of these beliefs as simple is to not understand them fully.

As with the other books in this series, I have introduced a third personality who can raise questions legitimately, since any known conversations between Jesus and Krishna do not exist. Subramaniam was a real person. Born a Hindu in the early part of the twentieth century, his is one of the most remarkable stories I have ever read. He challenged the religion of his birth and faced immense persecution for his actions, being ostracized and finally fleeing from his hometown to avoid death.

Incidentally, I have always marveled that so many religions exact this kind of revenge against dissenters. It only weakens the appeal of their own faith and contradicts any claims they might have made that “all religions are basically the same.” If all religions are indeed the same, why not let someone be "converted” to another religion?

I also marvel at the fury sometimes evident in those who attack others for examining and questioning their own worldview. If the repercussions of converting weren’t so serious, it would almost be comical to see the animosity of the responses. But what this revenge demonstrates so strongly is an inbuilt belief that conversion is wrong. And why is conversion so forbidden?

It circles back again to the one notion that all religions subscribe to—the notion of exclusive truth. I have also introduced a fourth character, Richard, a fictional traveler to India who converses with Subramaniam on the road to Mathura and later eavesdrops on the conversation between Jesus, Krishna, and Subramaniam.

Richard does not lean heavily behind the curtain, as Subramaniam does, but it is my hope that he will someday—as it is my hope that all people who seek spiritual truth will. Another factor is at stake in the following discussion: it is easy to take the weakest aspect of a worldview and exploit it. But that is not what I wish to do. When one encounters expressions of belief that are openly affirmed and followed, even when they seem bizarre, one must ask the hardest questions. One must examine the stronger
aspects of any worldview as well.

At base, one of my consistent premises throughout this series is that the popular aphorism “All religions are fundamentally the same and only superficially different” simply is not true. It is more correct to say that all religions are, at best, superficially similar but fundamentally different.

In the pages to come, I hope that the vast differences between Christianity and Hinduism will become very evident in this imaginary dialogue. Yet it is important to remember that, as different as these faiths are, we must learn to accept those differences peaceably. Still, let us not be so mindless as to think that Christianity and Hinduism are saying the same thing and that, in the end, the differences do not really matter. Both claim to be true and legitimate. This rationally implies, then, that it does matter what you believe. That is what this imaginary dialogue is about.
—Ravi Zacharias

From AudioFile
Simon Vance's effortless-sounding narration of a fictional chat between Jesus and Krishna is helped along by a real-life Hindu of the twentieth century, Subramaniam, who asks hard questions about Hinduism and Christianity. The author's premise is that both religions contain exclusive claims to truth. Vance interprets the author's work with delicate authenticity and reveals a basic difference between the two faiths: Hindus believe in reincarnation while Christians believe in the resurrection. Vance's crisp, clear presentation provides three benefits for listeners: an appreciation of the distinctive aspects of Christianity and Hinduism, excellent examples of how to dialogue on sensitive issues, and help for seekers on "finding one's way." This well-done teaching audio is a creative way for Christians to learn about Hinduism. G.D.W. AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine

A fascinating book on religion
By Midwest Book Review
As the leading religion of the west is Christianity, so one of the leading religions of the East is Hinduism. "New Birth or Rebirth: Jesus Talks with Krishna" is a unique and scholarly examination by Ravi Zacharias of the two religions and how they relate. Written as a fictional conversation from the perspective of Subramaniam, a Hindu, it asks many questions of both religions, pointing out several intriguing facts, and asking interesting questions. "New Birth or Rebirth" is a fascinating book on religion, offers a fresh perspective, and is a welcome addition to personal and community library Religion/Spirituality reference collections.

A fascinating Approac to Buddahism
By An Old Parson
As per usual Ravi Zacharias comes through with slam-bang insight, and most readable presentation. His intellect is evident and his way of framing history and logic compelling. He is worth reading again and again and giving/sending his material to friends. I have followed him for many years and have never been disappointed in/with any of his presentations, whether in print or voice.

This is a great little book that brings understanding to the differences between Hinduism and Christianity. It's an easy and enjoyable read because Ravi set it up as a conversation, and gives great insight for someone looking to understand the differences between these faiths. And you can easily read it in a sitting or two. I highly recommend it!

Carle, whose The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been extraordinarily successful, scores again with this stunning picture book, drawn in thick, brilliant brushstrokes of blues and greens and reds that dazzle the eye. Monica wants to play with the moon, but can't reach it, so she asks her father to get it for her. Ingeniously designed with several fold-out pages, the books opens out horizontally to show a very long ladder Papa fetches, opens vertically to show him climbing the ladder above a very high mountain, and unfolds into a huge spread of the full moon, where the ladder has led Papa. But the moon is too big for him to carry, so he waits while it grows smaller, until finally it is the right size to bring home to Monica. She jumps and dances and frolics with it, but it keeps shrinking, until one day it's gone. But not for long: a thin sliver soon appears in the sky, growing larger and becoming full once again. A splendid introduction to the monthly lunar cycle, this is also a wondrous work of art that will stand up to countless readings.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1 A simple story, briefly told, which revolves around the waxing and waning of the moon. Monica asks Papa to bring her the moon, that she might play with it. By dint of "a very long ladder" and a mountain, Papa reaches the moon, waits until it becomes smaller, and obligingly retrieves it. Of course the moon continues to shrink and soon disappears, but a few nights later Monica sees it once again in the sky, where it begins to grow anew. Many of the pages fold out to double their size, which will delight young listeners but may be awkward for the storyteller during a group experience. Carle's illustrations are up to his usual excellence, bright and uncluttered, with the benignant moon a dominant feature. The flaw here is a weak ending; children are not exactly left hanging, but neither is there a strong sense of conclusion. While this is not a pourquoi tale in the true sense of the word, the changing moon is a familiar subject, and the illustrations have enough merit to attract children. Not a real boardbook. Flimsy foldout pages will not last a day with a toddler.
By Joe Mama
Usually you buy the board book for 1 reason. Because they are usually stronger and the pages do not tear. This book is a board book but 6 of the pages fold out and that is where the problem lies. The fold out pages are regular flimsy paper and all have been ripped in the last couple months. The middle moon page has to be folded perfectly back into the book or it will rip. I would recommend the paperback or hardcover as this board book is a big job just reading it to a toddler. A book should be relaxing time not wondering how to get the pages back in before turning the pages. You should be able to let your toddler hold the book but this one will not make it one reading if you let a toddler turn the pages. I love Eric Carles books but this one is too much work.

don't buy the board book version
By H. Norrod
Okay, my son REALLY likes this book, so one star is straight from him to you. The other three stars are from me. The pictures are lovely as Eric Carle's work always is. Clearly my son sees magic in them. The story is okay...there is not really a resolution at the end and I kind of made up one because that bothers me. On the other hand, it is touching that Monica's dad goes to such trouble to get her heart's desire.

My real beef with this is that the board book version is put together so poorly. The fold out pages are just like wrapping paper glued on the board pages. Literally--you can see the lumps of glue, and the pages aren't exactly straight. Really, publisher? You couldn't make them like card-stock, the way lift-the-flap books usually are? I almost sent it back, but my son liked it so well I decided to keep it. I recommend checking out other editions of this book before buying.

Teeny Weeny!
By Crumbcake Mykland
Great little book. Cute story, but TINY.
I misread the size and was disappointed in how small it is, however, the 4 stars is due to the folding out pages. As fun as it is for older children, or young ones that have learned to respect books, it can be tricky for them to fold them in by themselves without bending them in the wrong areas. If you plan to use this book as a "tool" to teach children how to be extra careful with books, this is a good one!
Its still a good one otherwise, but just make sure you keep an eye out while your child has it.

Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots, by Deborah Feldman

The instant New York Times bestselling memoir of a young Jewish woman’s escape from a religious sect, in the tradition of Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s Infidel and Carolyn Jessop’s Escape, featuring a new epilogue by the author.

As a member of the strictly religious Satmar sect of Hasidic Judaism, Deborah Feldman grew up under a code of relentlessly enforced customs governing everything from what she could wear and to whom she could speak to what she was allowed to read. It was stolen moments spent with the empowered literary characters of Jane Austen and Louisa May Alcott that helped her to imagine an alternative way of life. Trapped as a teenager in a sexually and emotionally dysfunctional marriage to a man she barely knew, the tension between Deborah’s desires and her responsibilities as a good Satmar girl grew more explosive until she gave birth at nineteen and realized that, for the sake of herself and her son, she had to escape.

"A remarkable tale."--"Kirkus Reviews"

One of "O" magazine's "10 Titles to Pick Up Now"

"Unorthodox is a fascinating book . . . Feldman's voice resonates throughout."--"The Jewish Daily Forward"

"Deborah Feldman was raised in an insular, oppressive world where she was taught that, as a woman, she wasn't capable of independent thought. But she found the pluck and determination needed to make the break from that world and has written a brave, riveting account of her journey. "Unorthodox "is harrowing, yet triumphant."--Jeannette Walls, #1 bestselling author of "The Glass Castle" and "Half Broke Horses"

"Feldman gives us special insight into a closed and repressive world. . . . Her memoir is fresh and tart and utterly absorbing."--"Library Journal"

"An unprecedented view into a Hasidic community that few outsiders ever experience. . . . "Unorthodox" reminds us that there are religious communities in the United States that restrict young women to marriage and motherhood. These women are expected to be obedient to their community and religion, without question or complaint, no matter the price."--"Minneapolis Star-Tribune"

"[Feldman's] no-holds-barred memoir bookstores on February 14th. And it's not exactly a Valentine to the insular world of shtreimels, sheitels and shtiebels. Instead, ["Unorthodox"] describes an oppressive community in which secular education is minimal, outsiders are feared and disdained, English-language books are forbidden, mental illness is left untreated, abuse and other crimes go unreported . . . a surprisingly moving, well-written and vivid coming-of-age tale."--"The Jewish Week"

"[Feldman's] matter-of-fact style masks some penetrating insights.""--The New York Times"

"Nicely written . . . [An] engaging and at times gripping insight into Brooklyn's Hasidic community."--"Publishers Weekly"

""Unorthodoz" is painfully good. . . .Unlike so many other authors who have left Orthodoxy and written about it, [Feldman's] heart is not hardened by hatred, and her spirit is wounded but intact. . . . She is a sensitive and talented writer."--JewishJournal.com

"Denied every kind of nourishment except the doughy, shimmering plates of food obsessively produced by her Holocaust-survivor grandmother . . . books nourish [Feldman's] spirit and put in her hands the liberatory power of storytelling. As she becomes a reader and then a writer, Feldman reinvents herself as a human being."--"Newsday" (New York)

"Compulsively readable, "Unorthodox" relates a unique coming-of-age story that manages to speak personally to anyone who has ever felt like an outsider in her own life. Feldman bravely lays her soul bare, unflinchingly sharing intimate thoughts and ideas unthinkable within the deeply religious existence of the Satmars. . . . Teens will devour this candid, detailed memoir of an insular way of life so unlike that of the surrounding society.""--School Library Journal"

"Eloquent, appealing, and just emotional enough . . . No doubt girls all over Brooklyn are buying this book, hiding it under their mattresses, reading it after lights out--and contemplating, perhaps for the first time, their own escape."--HuffingtonPost.com

"Riveting . . . extraordinary.""--Marie Claire"

"Deborah Feldman has stripped the cloak off the insular Satmar sect of Hasidic Judaism, offering outsiders a rare glimpse into the ultraconservative world in which she was raised."--"Globe and Mail "(Toronto)

"[Deborah Feldman's] is an extraordinary story of struggle and dream. . . . Both her escape and her decision to tell her story are magnificent acts of courage."--Anouk Markovits, author of "I Am Forbidden"

Prologue

On the eve of my twenty-fourth birthday I interview my mother. We meet at a vegetarian restaurant in Manhattan, one that announces itself as organic and farm-fresh, and despite my recent penchant for all things pork and shellfish, I am looking forward to the simplicity the meal promises. The waiter who serves us is conspicuously gentile-looking, with scruffy blond hair and big blue eyes. He treats us like royalty because we are on the Upper East Side and are prepared to shell out a hundred bucks for a lunch consisting largely of vegetables. I think it is ironic that he doesn’t know that the two of us are outsiders, that he automatically takes our existence for granted. I never thought this day would come.

Before we met, I told my mother that I had some questions for her. Although we’ve spent more time together over the past year than we did in all my teenage years put together, thus far I’ve mostly avoided talking about the past. Perhaps I did not want to know. Maybe I didn’t want to find out that whatever information had been fed to me about my mother was wrong, or maybe I didn’t want to accept that it was right. Still, publishing my life story calls for scrupulous honesty, and not just my own.

A year ago to this date I left the Hasidic community for good. I am twenty-four and I still have my whole life ahead of me. My son’s future is chock-full of possibilities. I feel as if I have made it to the starting line of a race just in time to hear the gun go off. Looking at my mother, I understand that there might be similarities between us, but the differences are more glaringly obvious. She was older when she left, and she didn’t take me with her. Her journey speaks more of a struggle for security than happiness. Our dreams hover above us like clouds, and mine seem bigger and fluffier than her wispy strip of cirrus high in a winter sky.

As far back as I can remember, I have always wanted everything from life, everything it can possibly give me. This desire separates me from people who are willing to settle for less. I cannot even comprehend how people’s desires can be small, their ambitions narrow and limited, when the possibilities are so endless. I do not know my mother well enough to understand her dreams; for all I know, they seem big and important to her, and I want to respect that. Surely, for all our differences, there is that thread of common ground, that choice we both made for the better.

My mother was born and raised in a German Jewish community in England. While her family was religious, they were not Hasidic. A child of divorce, she describes her young self as troubled, awkward, and unhappy. Her chances of marrying, let alone marrying well, were slim, she tells me. The waiter puts a plate of polenta fries and some black beans in front of her, and she shoves her fork in a fry.

When the choice of marrying my father came along, it seemed like a dream, she says between bites. His family was wealthy, and they were desperate to marry him off. He had siblings waiting for him to get engaged so that they could start their own lives. He was twenty-four, unthinkably old for a good Jewish boy, too old to be single. The older they get, the less likely they are to be married off. Rachel, my mother, was my father’s last shot.

Everyone in my mother’s life was thrilled for her, she remembers. She would get to go to America! They were offering a beautiful, brand-new apartment, fully furnished. They offered to pay for everything. She would receive beautiful clothes and jewelry. There were many sisters-in-law who were excited to become her friends.

“So they were nice to you?” I ask, referring to my aunts and uncles, who, I remember, mostly looked down on me for reasons I could never fully grasp.

“In the beginning, yes,” she says. “I was the new toy from England, you know. The thin, pretty girl with the funny accent.”

She saved them all, the younger ones. They were spared the fate of getting older in their singlehood. In the beginning, they were grateful to see their brother married off.

“I made him into a mensch,” my mother tells me. “I made sure he always looked neat. He couldn’t take care of himself, but I did. I made him look better; they didn’t have to be so ashamed of him anymore.”

Shame is all I can recall of my feelings for my father. When I knew him, he was always shabby and dirty, and his behavior was childlike and inappropriate.

“What do you think of my father now?” I ask. “What do you think is wrong with him?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Delusional, I suppose. Mentally ill.”

“Really? You think it’s all that? You don’t think he was just plain mentally retarded?”

“Well, he saw a psychiatrist once after we were married, and the psychiatrist told me he was pretty sure your father had some sort of personality disorder, but there was no way to tell, because your father refused to cooperate with further testing and never went back for treatment.”

“Well, I don’t know,” I say thoughtfully. “Aunt Chaya told me once that he was diagnosed as a child, with retardation. She said his IQ was sixty-six. There’s not much you can do about that.”

“They didn’t even try, though,” my mother insists. “They could have gotten him some treatment.”

I nod. “So in the beginning, they were nice to you. But what happened after?” I remember my aunts talking about my mother behind her back, saying hateful things.

“Well, after the fuss calmed down, they started to ignore me. They would do things and leave me out of it. They looked down on me because I was from a poor family, and they had all married money and come from money and they lived different lives. Your father couldn’t earn any money, and neither could I, so your grandfather supported us. But he was stingy, counting out the bare minimum for groceries. He was very smart, your zeide, but he didn’t understand people. He was out of touch with reality.”

I still feel a little sting when someone says something bad about my family, as if I have to defend them.

“Your bubbe, on the other hand, she had respect for me, I could tell. No one ever listened to her, and certainly she was more intelligent and open-minded than anyone gave her credit for.”

“Oh, I agree with that!” I’m thrilled to find we have some common ground, one family member whom we both see the same way. “She was like that to me too; she respected me even when everyone else thought I was just troublesome.”

“Yes, well . . . she had no power, though.”

“True.”

So in the end she had nothing to cling to, my mother. No husband, no family, no home. In college, she would exist, would have purpose, direction. You leave when there’s nothing left to stay for; you go where you can be useful, where people accept you.

The waiter comes to the table holding a chocolate brownie with a candle stuck in it. “Happy birthday to you . . . ,” he sings softly, meeting my eyes for a second. I look down, feeling my cheeks redden.

“Blow out the candle,” my mother urges, taking out her camera. I want to laugh. I bet the waiter thinks that I’m just like every other birthday girl going out with her mom, and that we do this every year. Would anyone guess that my mother missed most of my birthdays growing up? How can she be so quick to jump back into things? Does it feel natural to her? It certainly doesn’t feel that way to me.

After both of us have devoured the brownie, she pauses and wipes her mouth. She says that she wanted to take me with her, but she couldn’t. She had no money. My father’s family threatened to make her life miserable if she tried to take me away. Chaya, the oldest aunt, was the worst, she says. “I would visit you and she would treat me like garbage, like I wasn’t your mother, had never given birth to you. Who gave her the right, when she wasn’t even blood?” Chaya married the family’s oldest son and immediately took control of everything, my mother recalls. She always had to be the boss, arranging everything, asserting her opinions everywhere.

And when my mother left my father for good, Chaya took control of me too. She decided that I would live with my grandparents, that I would go to Satmar school, that I would marry a good Satmar boy from a religious family. It was Chaya who, in the end, taught me to take control of my own life, to become iron-fisted like she was, and not let anyone else force me to be unhappy.

It was Chaya who convinced Zeidy to talk to the matchmaker, I learned, even though I had only just turned seventeen. In essence, she was my matchmaker; she was the one who decided to whom I was to be married. I’d like to hold her responsible for everything I went through as a result, but I am too wise for that. I know the way of our world, and the way people get swept along in the powerful current of our age-old traditions.

1In Search of My Secret Power

Matilda longed for her parents to be good and loving and understanding and honourable and intelligent. The fact that they were none of those things was something she had to put up with. . . .

Being very small and very young, the only power Matilda had over anyone in her family was brainpower.

Beautiful, relatable, sad. Ignore the personally motivated bad reviews
By Kindle Customer
I know what it's like to disown your family and leave your way of life, friends, community behind. I know what it's like to cut ties with the "good" family members and the "bad" at the same time, because there's no way to have one without the other.

This is a sad, clumsy, but ultimately beautiful story of growing up in a concentric circles of pretense and denial. First the author's own pressure to pretend to be the "good girl", then her immediate family pretending that nothing is wrong, despite being filled with abuse and pain and mental illness.

I noticed that a lot of the one star reviews seem to be from people with "skin in the game". This is very disturbing to me -- hasn't the author been through enough without people telling her she's a bad mom for getting divorced, that her husband is a nice man, that she is being a traitor, etc.? Seriously.

The power of choice
By Claudia Moscovici
(Un)orthodox and Hasidic Judaism

Raised by her grandparents, aunts and uncles in the Satmar sect of Hasidic Judaism in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, even as a child Deborah Feldman felt oppressed and out of place. In her controversial memoir, Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of my Hasidic Roots (New York: Simon and Schuster, 2012), she casts light upon the secretive and mystical world of Orthodox Judaism. Hasidic Jews live in the midst of our contemporary world in a way that strictly observes the religious rituals of their eighteenth-century Polish orthodox roots. Hasidic Judaism, which in the Hebrew language means “piety” or “loving-kindness”, originated in the Pale of Settlement region of eighteenth-century Poland, part of a large area in Eastern Europe set up by Catherine the Great of Russia in 1791 for Jewish habitation. The Pale of Settlement included a large part of the Polish Commonwealth as well as regions in modern Lithuania, Belarus, Moldova, the Ukraine and Russia.
Setting itself apart from the then prevalent Rabbinism, which had become a kind of religious formalism, Hasidic teachings emphasized Jewish mysticism and the strength of the religious community. It embraced the medieval tradition of Kabbalah and encouraged the religious study of the Torah by every Jewish male, an education that begins at the age of three and continues throughout their lives. Today there are approximately 30 large Hasidic groups, which rarely intermarry, and hundreds of smaller groups. Although similar in religious outlook, these groups tend to stick together to their own ethnic communities.
In the Hasidic religion, women are prohibited from religious study and even discouraged from reading lay books, which may corrupt their modesty. They are prescribed traditional roles as wives and mothers. Strict religious rituals govern the interaction between men and women. In the documentary entitled A Life Apart, PBS.org depicts the patriarchal microcosm of Hasidic Judaism:

“Orthodox women in particular are charged with a religious obligation to raise children and are "exempt" from all commandments that are considered "time-bound," i.e., those that must be performed at a certain time. These include the obligation to study Torah, and to attend daily prayer services. Men and women thus have considerably different experiences of spirituality and daily tasks. Most observers would not dispute that the Hasidim live in a traditionally patriarchal system. (http://www.pbs.org/alifeapart/intro_2.html)
Most members of Hasidic communities value deeply their traditional way of life and feel it is their duty to preserve it even in the midst of an increasingly egalitarian contemporary society. But what happens to those—particularly to women--who feel oppressed by the rules and patriarchal underpinnings of this atavistic way of life?
This is the predicament that Deborah Feldman, a young woman who feels trapped by the practices of her Hasidic community, finds herself in. Ignorant of sexuality and having had little contact with men outside her family, Deborah’s world dramatically changes for the worse when, according to the practices of the Satmar Sect of Hasidic Judaism to which her extended family belongs, she’s forced into an arranged marriage at the age of seventeen. Her husband, Eli, who although only 24 years old, is considered a late bloomer, is not a horrible man. But Deborah’s awakening feminist consciousness and her growing reluctance to embrace the world of Hasidic Judaism, combined with her husband’s strict observance of the traditional ways of his family, makes for a very unhappy marriage. Had Eli been paired up with a woman who was equally observant of the Hasidic religion, he might have made an excellent match. But his marriage to Deborah is, from the start, doomed to failure.
Their sexual inexperience–and Deborah’s ever-growing anxiety in living in a devoutly religious world she rejects—leads to sexual dysfunction for the couple. When, after several years of religious counseling and conventional therapy, Deborah and Eli have a baby (Yitzhak, whom they call Yitzy), the young mother finds herself as detached from their son as she is from her religiously observant husband. She’s alarmed by her own lack of maternal feeling, wondering, “Could I be so damaged by my childhood experiences that I was drained of the ability to love anything? It was one thing if I couldn’t manage to love a man I was arbitrarily arranged to marry. It was a whole other thing to feel detached from my own child” (217).
She looks within and considers exploring other paths in life, which could make her feel more fulfilled. Perhaps her lack of emotion is tied to her sense of dissatisfaction. Once she takes a poetry course at Sarah Lawrence College, she discovers her talent for writing and starts flourishing in a modern environment so different from the traditional society she was raised in. Deborah then realizes that a large part of her emotional unavailability is caused by the strain of living in a traditional culture to which she feels she doesn’t belong. Yet she feels torn, since the traditional way of life that she was brought up in is all she knows. For awhile, she leads a double life, struggling to change personas, from Hasidic to modern, as often as she changes her clothes: from the traditional long skirts prescribed by her religion to the jeans she changes into when she takes classes at Sarah Lawrence College. But only one persona reflects her true identity. Just as she feels more herself in jeans, she feels more at home in mainstream American society. Eventually, after much hesitation, Deborah takes a leap of faith, leaving the Hasidic way of life to begin a new, modern life with her son. The more at ease she feels with herself, the more bonded she feels to her baby. Deborah associates contemporary society with freedom: not the freedom to engage in excess, as it is for some youths who leave the Hasidic community, but the freedom to discover her talents and identity without shame and without having to hide.
When first published, Unorthodox was highly controversial, particularly for members of the Hasidic community, many of whom felt offended. This memoir offers a very critical and intimate perspective on a fundamentalist religion that many embrace wholeheartedly and willingly. For me, the most important aspect of this book was not so much its critique of orthodoxy as its emphasis upon individual choice: the freedom to choose one’s religion and way of life as an adult and, along with that, the freedom to choose one’s identity.

I liked it, but something
By Valerie Weiler
I liked it, but something, not sure exactly what, kept me from LOVING it. I'm Jewish, and have ALWAYS been FASCINATED by the Chasidic people and their culture. Though I grew up less than an hour away from this community, we're MILLIONS of miles apart.

As someone who grew up at times bored, annoyed, and bordering on "rejection" of my own (much more liberal/watered down) religion, a group that adheres this closely/narrowly to its cultural and religious practices is a source of wonder, disbelief, and (occasionally, I confess) annoyance. And THAT sums up (in part) how I felt about this book... Maybe I'm (not so secretly) envious of someone who was born into this fascinating world, some sort of "grass is greener on the other side of the fence thing," or maybe the author just didn't give me enough reason to identify with her, root for her, or even care too deeply whether she stayed or left "the fold."

I was not influenced by the HUGE controversy that seems to surround this book. She told HER story, and it's not even close to mine, so I'd never second-guess her or accuse her of stretching (or inventing) the truth. I really looked forward to this book, and I wish the author and her son the very best in their new lives, but I was less "scandalized" than "minimally surprised" by how things worked out for her, and found myself really wanting so much more. I'll keep an eye out for her follow-up book, but keep my expectations in check...
