      Not an introductory text
      By Kenneth J. Hass
This book is more about how to use the Keil software development tools than about the Cortex-M processors themselves, and it is very light on technical content for the processors. As the author states in the Preface: "it is assumed that...you are familiar with the instruction set of your preferred microcontroller. In addition, it is helpful to have basic knowledge on how to use the uVision debugger and IDE."

In a quick glance I found a number of typographical errors, and the code examples are often poorly formatted.

      No Color for Printed Book
      By K. Nichols
Just a quick note: I received the book today, and thought I'd point out to anyone who has looked through the Kindle "preview", which has all the nice color graphics. Don't expect that in the $58 printed edition, all the graphics are in black & white.

Many typos - missing programs in tutorial folder
      By Jon L
This book started out well in the first couple of chapters. However, it became increasingly difficult to follow
when the stated tutorial examples in the book did not match the ones in the tutorial zip file. It is very difficult to learn something when you don't have the correct tools for the job.

AFRICAN ORIGINS BOOK 1 PART 1 African Origins of African Civilization, Religion, Yoga Mysticism and Ethics Philosophy, by Muata Ashby

This current ebook is Volume 1. This description is for volumes 1-3. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 in one volume 683 Pages Hard Cover First Edition Three volumes in one. Over the past several years I have been asked to put together in one volume the most important evidences showing the correlations and common teachings between Kamitan (Ancient Egyptian) culture and religion and that of India. The questions of the history of Ancient Egypt, and the latest archeological evidences showing civilization and culture in Ancient Egypt and its spread to other countries, has intrigued many scholars as well as mystics over the years. Also, the possibility that Ancient Egyptian Priests and Priestesses migrated to Greece, India and other countries to carry on the traditions of the Ancient Egyptian Mysteries, has been speculated over the years as well. In chapter 1 of the book Egyptian Yoga The Philosophy of Enlightenment, 1995, I first introduced the deepest comparison between Ancient Egypt and India that had been brought forth up to that time. Now, in the year 2001 this new book, THE AFRICAN ORIGINS OF CIVILIZATION, MYSTICAL RELIGION AND YOGA PHILOSOPHY, more fully explores the motifs, symbols and philosophical correlations between Ancient Egyptian and Indian mysticism and clearly shows not only that Ancient Egypt and India were connected culturally but also spiritually. How does this knowledge help the spiritual aspirant? This discovery has great importance for the Yogis and mystics who follow the philosophy of Ancient Egypt and the mysticism of India. It means that India has a longer history and heritage than was previously understood. It shows that the mysteries of Ancient Egypt were essentially a yoga tradition which did not die but rather developed into the modern day systems of Yoga technology of India. It further shows that African culture developed Yoga Mysticism earlier than any other civilization in history. All of this expands our understanding of the unity of culture and the deep legacy of Yoga, which stretches into the distant past, beyond the Indus Valley civilization, the earliest known high culture in India as well as the Vedic tradition of Aryan culture. Therefore, Yoga culture and mysticism is the oldest known tradition of spiritual development and Indian mysticism is an extension of the Ancient Egyptian mysticism. By understanding the legacy which Ancient Egypt gave to India the mysticism of India is better understood and by comprehending the heritage of Indian Yoga, which is rooted in Ancient Egypt the Mysticism of Ancient Egypt is also better understood. This expanded understanding allows us to prove the underlying kinship of humanity, through the common symbols, motifs and philosophies which are not disparate and confusing teachings but in reality expressions of the same study of truth through metaphysics and mystical realization of Self.

NORAD and the Soviet Nuclear Threat: Canada’s Secret Electronic Air War, by Gordon A.A. Wilson

Explore the history of the Canadian air defence of North America during the Cold War.

NORAD and the Soviet Nuclear Threat is the history of the air defence of Canada during the Cold War era. The reader is taken into the Top Secret world of NORAD, the joint Canadian-American North American Air Defence network. Ride along with the aircrew in their cockpit as they fight an electronic joust in the skies. Go deep underground to the Command Centre as the Air Weapons controllers plot the air war on their radar screens. Visit the radar sites deep in the Canadian bush as they struggle to provide the radar data for an electronic air battle happening overhead.

An actual NORAD exercise on 10 May 1973, called Amalgam Mute, is used as an example. This exercise tested that NORAD was honouring its motto: Deter, Detect, Destroy, and was protecting North America from aerial threat. There is an extensive explanation of the aircraft, squadrons, weapons, radar, and radar sites involved.

Included are two personal accounts of the first interception of a Soviet "Bear" bomber off the coast of Canada, and the first Canadian fighter interceptor pilot to win the coveted United States Air Force "Top Gun" award.

NORAD and the Soviet Nuclear Threat: Canada's Secret Electronic Air WarThis book gives an amazing insight into the joint USA/Canada operations set up to protect the North American continent from any attack from the Soviet Union during the Cold War period and the personal involvement of the author flying with the Canadian Air Force during those years. It is a must read for military and aviation historians who have an interest in the background to these matters and the solutions found to the difficulties in establishing and maintaining a joint operation between the two nations with changing political policies.

The cover is enticing and the book well presented with plenty of fine photos, both colour and B&W. I was impressed with the supporting material which provided many interesting insights and showed extensive research. The author captures the visceral excitement of flying in high speed fighters conducting interception exercises against real and simulated Soviet incursions. The use of live histories and anecdotes brings the narrative to life. Readers will come away with a better understanding of a significant period in our mutual defence of North America.

The Night Country: A Novel, by Stewart O'Nan

A ghost story that begins in everyday tragedy, from a distinctly American master of both forms: a "scary, sad, funny . . . mesmerizing read" (Stephen King)

At Midnight on Halloween in a cloistered New England suburb, a car carrying five teenagers leaves a winding road and slams into a tree, killing three of them. One escapes unharmed, another suffers severe brain damage. A year later, summoned by the memories of those closest to them, the three that died come back on a last chilling mission among the living.

A strange and unsettling ghost story, The Night Country creeps through the leaf-strewn streets and quiet cul-de-sacs of one bedroom community, reaching into the desperately connected yet isolated lives of three people changed forever by the accident: Tim, who survived yet lost everything; Brooks, the cop whose guilty secret has destroyed his life; and Kyle's mom, trying to love the new son the doctors returned to her. As the day wanes and darkness falls, one of them puts a terrible plan into effect, and they find themselves caught in a collision of need and desire, watched over by the knowing ghosts.

Macabre and moving, The Night Country elevates every small town's bad high school crash into myth, finding the deeper human truth beneath a shared and very American tragedy. As in his highly-prized Snow Angels and A Prayer for the Dying, once again Stewart O'Nan gives us an intimate look at people trying to hold on to hope, and the consequences when they fail.

      From Publishers Weekly
More poignant than terrifying, this contemporary ghost story set in suburban Connecticut focuses on the survivors of a car accident that killed three teenagers on Halloween exactly a year before the novel begins. Tim escaped without a scratch, but seeks to assuage his survivor's guilt on the first anniversary of the event. Kyle, once a teen rebel, is now a brain-damaged shadow (a kind of zombie) of his former self. Brooks, the townie cop who discovered the accident, watches helplessly as his life skids out of control. And most poignant of all, Nancy Sorensen, Kyle's mother, stoically cares for her damaged son and tries to heal a marriage nearly destroyed by grief. These sad characters are haunted in another way as well, by the ghosts of the three killed instantly in the crash: Marco, Toe and Danielle, who address themselves directly to the reader. "We're on a mission," they say, but their objective is never explicitly stated; they just observe as the day's events unfold. Each character's story is told (and, eventually, woven together) in O'Nan's simple, searching prose, which captures the inchoate passion and longing of teenage life as well as the bleak resignation of middle age. O'Nan demonstrates remarkable restraint; there's no grasping for tragic meaning (the accident was "just something random that happened to us, bad luck," according to Marco) or melodrama. Despite some confusing shifts in time-it's occasionally hard to decipher what's happening now and what happened then-a coherent thesis of misfortune emerges: death has many victims, and the ghosts haunting the survivors don't only appear on Halloween.

      From Booklist
The aftermath of a Halloween tragedy haunts a New England town on the one-year anniversary of a typical teen joyride that ended with a car wrapped around a tree. Toe, Marco, and Danielle were instantly killed. Kyle lives on, sort of; a severe brain injury obliterates the rebel in him, the accident leaving him with the mind of a child. Tim, "the lucky one" in the backseat, his arms around Danielle, survived but now has a death wish. Officer Brooks, the first on the scene, was terribly altered by the event, and his life is in shambles. Now, on Halloween, he fears that Tim is going to do something horrible. Travis and Greg, buds of Toe, don't want the day to go by without memorializing their dear departed friends. O'Nan, author of Wish You Were Here [BKL F 1 02], tells a ghost story from the point of view of Marco's ghost. Like the narrator of Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones [BKL My 1 02], Marco (along with Danielle and Toe) can witness the lives of those they left behind, see the impact their deaths have had on the community, but have little direct effect on certain inevitabilities--an interesting literary contrivance that doesn't always pay off (see Douglas Coupland's Girlfriend in a Coma (1998) and Hey, Nostradamus [BKL My 15 03] for other examples of this vantage point). O'Nan's voice is compelling, his prose lovely and evocative. Benjamin Segedin

Haunted Look At A Halloween Car Wreck ...
      By Kindle Customer
And the lives altered by it. Stewart O'Nan takes the lives of all the people involved in a terrible car wreck on Halloween, puts them under a magnifying glass and forces you to watch their shattered existences play out in this brilliant novel he dedicated to Ray Bradbury-another God of the written word.

The story is told from the perspective of ghost teenagers who perished in the crash. When their loved ones think of them, which is almost all the time, they are summoned to their sides to watch on helpless, as their lives spiral out of control from losing them.

When you reach the midway point of this book, you'll think it's nothing more than a deep character study of these ruined lives, but then O'Nan takes you in a completely different direction, turning his prose into suspense, taking hold of your mind until you reach the final page.

This guy knows how to write and keep the reader wondering what the hell is going on in a good way. And as with any meaningful book, the characters in this one stay with you after the final page is turned.

The Night Country was my first O'Nan book and after turning page fifty, I got back on here fast and ordered more of his works. This isn't a bad place to start, I think.

This one will stay with you ... trust me.

Home is where your losses are...
      By P. Padden
The Night Country begins with a seductive invitation: "Come then, come with us, out into the night... come stalk the dark back roads and stand outside the bright houses, calm as murderers in the yard, quiet as deer."
It's Cabbage Night, the night before Hallowe'en in Avon, Connecticut, and you've just been invited to spend some quality time with Marco and Toe and Danielle, beginning on this cool autumn night that "smells of dust and coriander on the wind."
"It's the best time of year up here," Marco tells us - "witch hunts and woodsmoke... a 'new' England... veined with black rivers and massacres."
Marco and Danielle and Toe are three sweet, feisty, and very likeable teens, or at least they were until last Hallowe'en when, joyriding around the back roads, tired after working at their menial jobs, but happy just being together - "wanting the night to last forever" - they die in a horrific accident. Also in the car are Kyle, their bud-dealing Goth pal, and Tim, Danielle's sweet, introspective boyfriend.
Part of Kyle survives the accident, but with brain damage so severe that his personality, his prickly rebelliousness, is deadened. "Imagine diving off a five story building and landing on your face," suggests Marco. "Now imagine getting better." Kyle's nose and cheeks and forehead are prostheses - "only his chin is the same, and his hands."
Tim, Danielle's boyfriend, is the only one to survive the accident physically intact, but he's lost everything - all of the friendship and love that gave his life its meaning. Plagued by loss and survivor's guilt, he no longer feels any sense of belonging to - or in - the world.
More than the dead, these living victims haunt Officer Brooks, the police officer who initiates the high speed chase that precipitates the accident, but it's the dead who mess with Brooksie's head, sitting, invisible, in his kitchen teasing his dogs to make them bark - egging him on to commit the unspeakable - "We've seen him hang up his gun in slow motion, deliberate as a horror flick, and only Toe's twisted enough to make the holster swing, a cheesy temptation." Toe's ghost is twitching for vindication and revenge - he was the one behind the wheel, seemingly responsible for his own death as well as his friends'.
Danielle's ghost tries desperately to soothe Tim's appalling loneliness, and to fend off his desire to join her - "This must be how Dylan Klebold felt," Tim thinks on the heartbreaking anniversary of the accident - "knowing he was going to school the next day and never coming home." And Marco narrates it all for us with a kind of edgy detachment as the six characters are compelled to act out the final scenes of their intimately enmeshed lives and deaths.
Loneliness and isolation stalk through the pages of The Night Country as Kyle's mom struggles with the pity she can't abide and the fear of being perceived as a monster if she tries to move beyond her grief to resume a normal life, and Officer Brooks struggles to atone for the one tragic mistake that he made too late in his career and his life to forgive himself. Tim is a pariah now - the kids at school see his dead friends as legends, and Tim as an anomaly - not a lucky survivor, but a victim, the other one who should have died.
The book ends in a cataclysmic liebestodt of vindication and vengeance, remembrance and redemption, and in its final paragraph answers Marco's poignant question, "Where would we be if love ended at death?"
The emotional impact of this book belies its brevity. As with much of what Mr. O'Nan writes, I had a good cry reading it - several of them, in fact. The weird part was, my box of tissues kept disappearing and then turning up someplace that I knew I hadn't left it. Toe, probably. He'd be twisted enough.

learning to transfer is 90% of the battle
      By Amazon Customer
REVIEW FOLLOWS A FEW REMARKS ABOUT TRANSFER OF IMAGES - I just got this book as a present and am astonished how well it meshes with all my other dover books - this was one I was going to get - and it was a present from a fellow engraver. BUT it's not just for artists, it's also a wonderful coffee table book if put out with a few others (see my review of Florid Victorian Ornament Florid Victorian Ornament (Dover Pictorial Archives) to learn why) - it's a long review, but you'll understand why it's a VERY cheap way to 'dress' up your living room, and keep guests occupied while you are out of the room. Perhaps 'occupied' is an understatement -- when they begin to see color in black and white drawings, they will be astounded by the art form -- weather graphic, or as is my case, engraved. And the longer you look at the line drawings, the more you will see, and soon you, like me, will find yourself looking at a single page for 10 minutes and wonder where the time went! Forget curved lines, though they are amazing, what you can do with simple straight lines is beyond your imagination right now, then add in the curves and it's a new world you are peeking into!!! FIVE STARS WITHOUT QUESTION!!! Light, dark, shadings, hue and saturation of color -- all in black and white line drawings -- it's amazing! TEN STARS!

      ========
most reviews have said that the lines are far to complicated to transfer. this is because there are many ways to transfer - from special wheels with needle like spikes that come out and you just 'connect the dots' - to the use of Methenol, Ethenol, Xylenol, or toulene -- each ink company has it's own chemical that works best -- as does the paper you use. Check the paint section of your hard ware store, and you may even be makeing a trip to an auto parts store too for something to transfer on to. Supermarket and drug store 'alcohol' is too much water and won't work well without a LOT of smudging.

photocopy or print the page, place ink side down, and practice with a Q-tip until you get your transfer down -- it will be from a solid line to a sometimes broken line - and as a firearms engraver in hard metal, I NEED the fine-line shading to bring out light and shadow. Often I can transfer lines as small as 000 - and if not, with the original there, I can chose the correct fine-liner to make it happen. With me, there IS no 'erase' or 'do over' -- you are having your grandfathers Winchester, or your Great Grandfathers Winchester engraved, or a civil war Sharps that your Great-grand-daddy used in the War of Northern Aggression -- and that gun cannot be replaced, sometimes not even repaired at great cost - so being exact is more than important, missing a strike, or skidding across the metal can result in law suits and thousands of dollars for damage to irreplaceable objects -- so my lines and my gravers have to be sharp and clear, and the 50-120 strikes per inch have to be perfect each time, every time. Just like a sculpture -- you can't have a 'woops' and put the arm back on. Ink is much the same way, but often you can cover your mistake, in some arts, there can be no mistakes. Ever - so you get your transfer right until it's perfect.

Sometimes you may need to 'seal' the surface so the transferring ink doesn't soak into and 'smudge' on the object being transfered to.

Buy, or go to your library and get a copy of James B. Meeks "the art of engraving' where he has hints about how to transfer -- from using china white, to auto-body primer, to many other substances - Art of Engraving: A Book of Instructions and I'm sure that there are books in your own field that will help you transfer -- often a community college or state University will have an instructor in a lab who will take the time to answer a question of someone not enrolled in their class. Especially on something as important as design transfer. if they want you to enroll as I've seen ONE instructor requie -do it, you can always immediately withdraw, and get most of your money back. It's what 'Office Hours' are for: individual instruction of students -- use them -- and get out -- but when you think of it - free use of a kiln and glaze can be rather appealing -- esp if you take an incomplete, and can use the lab until you complete the final assignment for up to a full year in most places, with no more money up front -- I used to teach in college, it's a trick i learned when I learned to engrave -- even taking an F so I could repeat up to three times with an incomplete each time -- pay for three semesters, get 9. It can be a bargain. And in Lab courses you can become an unofficial 'aide' and pick every last morsel and detail and secret from your professors brain! You are, in essence a pod person who sucks your professors brain dry! WHILE you face problems you have not even encountered yet, but might some day -- when you'd have a solution and not need help!

I have found most of these Dover books exceptional in most every respect -- you can see my review of Florid Victorian Ornament (Dover Pictorial Archives) for an idea of what I think of these 'design' books -- and if nothing else, they make a wonderful 'coffee table book' -- but I suspect that after reading Meeks, and talking ot a college instructor, you will learn a LOT about transfer.

In hard metal engraving the problem is to not 'chip' the surface the transfer is on, I imagine that in leather or clay where you 'draw' the design in using different sized wooden or steel dowels, this problem will not BE a problem.

Amazingly enough, this book was returned to me TODAY with one I loaned as a thank you for the loan -- and I can see the problem you faced, but it's no different from the florid Victorian book -- lean to transfer -- practice -- I usually think of it as "playing around" with an idea, because it's more fun than PRACTICE!! (uggghhhh!) - and I think the book will come alive for you -- I already have seen what it has done to a flint-lock and matching knife -- and some of the lines are 0-00-000, though most are 1's and 2's and I can look at the original, and the transfer and see very little difference.

Join a guild, or ask a professional who teaches because the professional who teaches has probably read a lot about transfer - and IT IS A PROBLEM faced by those who lack the 'secret' knowledge. And if one says no, keep looking, we had a teacher who said that he would not teach or discuss transfer except how to transfer for your own personal collection, and it was ONLY smoke transfer, perhaps the oldest and most primitive transfer possible --and one you could NEVER use from a printed page or someone else's work -- So find out from another teacher -- or go to a large city library, and look in an index under 'transfer' -- in EVERY book, for each author may have their own pet way, or have a unique, nearly fail-safe way.

When all else fails -- which is rare -- get a number one or softer pencil and draw over your photocopy, then 'burnish' the back, transferring the pencil onto the object, then 'draw the line you grave, and grave the line you draw' as my Master told me.

This book looks AMAZING -- and so it gets five full stars! And I can already see where it can be mix and matched with other Dover books for design -- wow! --Dover -- NO COPYRIGHT DESIGN! Viva Dover!

      Great reference
      By BIOWORKZ
I don't agree with the previous 2 reviews of this book. I think it has plenty of great elements to incorporate into any design. Maybe they are right about being too complicated for crafts. I am a graphic artist, and the more complicated, the better. I especially like the details of the mystical creatures that are featured in this book. Lots of flourishes and victorian type ornamentation like most of Dover's books in this genre. I believe this book stands on it's own and worth having it as part of your clipart library.

      This book is excellent
      By David Ivey
A couple of reviews have mentioned that the designs in this book were too intricate and therefore they gave it less than stellar reviews. However, I believe that this is the books strength and not it weakness. I design websites and the images in this book worked perfectly, precisely because they were more detailed.

Classical Music For Dummies, by David Pogue, Scott Speck

The more you know about classical music, the more you love it. Now, thanks to Classical Music For Dummies, you can achieve a whole new level of insight into both the composers and the compositions that have made classical music one of the great accomplishments of humankind.

Classical Music For Dummies doesn't assume that you have a degree in musicology -- or even that you took a course in music appreciation. Rather, the multimedially gifted David Pogue and renowned conductor Scott Speck explain classical music in terms you can understand, and they describe musical elements so that you can hear them for yourself.

A reference you can dip into at any point, Classical Music For Dummies covers such topics as

      • The various forms that classical music takes -- from symphonies to string quartets
      • What goes on behind the scenes and on stage to fill a concert hall with great classical music
      • How to recognize, by sight and by sound, the many instruments that make up an orchestra
      • The nuts and bolts of classical music -- from rhythm to harmonic progression
Plus, Classical Music For Dummies comes complete with a CD containing over 60 minutes of masterpieces compiled especially for the book. The CD also includes a demo version of the Angel/EMI Classics For DummiesTM multimedia interface to try out on your Windows-based PC or Macintosh computer.

      Amazon.com Review
In a time when school music classes (if they exist at all) teach their students the finer points of the themes from The Twilight Zone and Jaws instead of real music; when classical radio stations are converted to Lite Rock or switched to a "top 100" classical jukebox format; and when even churches increasingly favor banal "Jesus Is My Boyfriend"-style slop instead of Bach, Mozart, and Vaughn Williams, classical music may legitimately be seen as an endangered cultural species. Enter Scott Speck and David Pogue, who take out the unnecessary mystery, and offer an easy-to-swallow quickie education, ranging from Gregorian chants to contemporary composers such as John Adams and John Corigliano. If you can't tell an oboe from a bassoon, there's also a dandy guide to the instruments of the orchestra, and once you're through that information you'll know the difference between a concerto and a sonata. Best of all is the introduction to music theory, which actually makes a daunting subject seem easy. It's all supported by a helpful enhanced compact disc (it works in your CD-ROM drive; it plays on your stereo's CD player) containing more than an hour of representative musical tidbits from good EMI recordings. Although the tone is unremittingly flippant and the jokes are, for the most part, pretty bad, Classical Music for Dummies is one of the better works in this series, and really does provide a useful reference for a subject too often seen as arcane.

      From Library Journal
Though musicians and other music lovers continue to lament the lack of classical music enthusiasts, their concern may have diminished somewhat over the last 25 years. The "Hooked on Classics" recording series, Peter Schickele (a.k.a. P.D.Q. Bach), the Three Tenors, and the movie Shine are but a few of the media phenomena that have popularized classical music. Lately, some authors have taken a lighthearted approach to the genre, hoping to make it less intimidating; Barry Scherer's delightful Bravo! A Guide to Opera for the Perplexed (LJ 11/15/96) is an example not to be overlooked. It does appear, however, that with these two books from IDG's ever-expanding "For Dummies" series, classical music has finally arrived. Orchestrator, synthesizer programmer, music copyist, and vocal arranger Pogue and symphony conductor Speck have collaborated to make musical facts fun to peruse. In some cases, the information may seem oversimplified, but novices will come away with a fairly good idea of the important composers, the main periods of music, the instruments, the conductors, the artists, when to applaud at a concert or opera, and even what to wear to a performance. Icons throughout pinpoint tips, advanced information, listening guides, when to use the accompanying CDs, and stories to use in conversations. Both books are recommended for public libraries.?Kathleen Sparkman, Baylor Univ. Lib., Waco, Tex.

The book to read to understand and enjoy classical music!
      By A Customer
I've always loved all kinds of music but never really listened to or understood what's going on with classical music. This book was incredible. Just playing the CD that comes with the book and reading the section that walks you through each piece of music opened up a whole new world of music appreciation. With each piece they present possible interpretations of what the composer was actually trying to do/say. This combined with an explanation of the musical forms that they used make you realize that it's not just a random collection of musical phrases. There's very interesting things going on there! There's also a great history section covering all of the big names of classical music and there are plenty of musical recommendations to listen to throughout the book. This is just a great education in music (I've been a musician for 20 years and I still learned something!)

The free CD is wonderful and humor is very entertaining!
      By Abby Warren
I bought this because I have been listening to classical music since I subscribed to Sirius XM and wanted to learn more about the music I am hearing and enjoying. Even though it is a topic I am interested in, I can imagine that simply reading about music could be dull. Not so with Classical Music for Dummies. Somehow they manage to get a lot of humor into the text of every one of these books making any topic fun to learn! I have purchased several For Dummies books, but this one especially has had my chuckling as I make my way through it. The 80 or so pages of the history of classical music and a short biography of all the most famous composers was exactly what I was hoping to get from a book on classical music. Knowing something about each ones adds quite a bit to the enjoyment of their compositions. The book came with a CD with selected pieces to illustrate several various forms of music. The pieces are absolutely beautiful and great start or addition to a classical collection. Chapter 5 guides you through the CD one musical piece at a time explaining how the composer put it together and what to expect from the piece. If you are considering buying a copy, I highly recommend it. The CD alone and the notes on it are well worth the price. And the humor makes for a few lovely and relaxing hours of reading.

      humor overpowers the content
      By C. Brown
You have to be careful with the Dummies series. Some authors use humor with discretion, others, as in this case, lard on so much humor that it gets in the way of learning and turns what should be a pleasure into an ordeal of extracting the useful information from the attempt at clever wise-cracks, puns and general satire.

Yes, there is information here if you are willing to work to get it, but a good 50% of the text is gratuitous laughs. There are other books, such as "The Classical Music Experience" by Jacobson, that treat the reader as someone intelligent who seeks to know rather than to be entertained.

The best advice is to go to the library and look in the music appreciation section. You'll find many superior alternatives to this book.
