About the Author
Matt Furey started training his body to achieve maximum results when he was just a teenager in Carroll, Iowa. At that time he began training three days a week to get in condition for combat sports such as football and wrestling. Throughout his high school and collegiate wrestling career Furey recognized that weight training did not give him functional strength or endurance. He found that exercises without weights were better than anything else he was doing. Often referred to as calisthenics, his teammates belittled these efforts stating that they were outdated until he started winning wrestling titles.

Furey began studying various martial arts in 1990 and immediately saw the physical, mental and philosophical links these arts had with wrestling and penned his first book, The Martial Art of Wrestling. In 1999, Furey befriended 1948 Olympian Karl Gotch,, known as The God of Wrestling in Japan, who showed him that in spite of a national and world title in wrestling, in terms of conditioning, Furey had a long way to go. He credits Gotch for teaching him the fine art of conditioning and dedicates the book to him.

Furey wrote two additional books called Combat Abs and Gama Fitness along with other supportive materials and DVDs. Furey writes monthly columns for Inside Kung Fu and Karate (Japan). He has been featured in GQ, Black Belt, Grappling, Martial Arts & Combat Sports, Blitz, Martial Arts Illustrated and many other publications throughout the world. Matt and his family travel back and forth between their homes in Florida and Hainan Island, China.

Not as bad as others claim...

There are many people on the net that talk negatively about Matt and I am not sure why. What most people fail to realize is that Matt Furey started a whole new bodyweight conditioning craze that has been moving forward at full steam ever since. If it wasn't for Matt Furey most people wouldn't know what a Hindu Squat or Hindu Push-Up even is. If it wasn't for Matt Furey there wouldn't be tons of other authors and trainers making money on bodyweight exercises. Regardless of what people think of his advertising methods or his claims, Matt has brought some solid bodyweight exercises to the public's attention and helped to improve health and fitness around the globe.

Now for the book... this new cartoon edition is pretty interesting. It contains the same info found in Matt's first book but takes a cartoon spin. Personally I like this edition better than the original. It's just a little more unique. Also, more than 3 exercises can be found within it's pages. Yes, Matt covers the Royal Court but there are are many other exercise to include handstands, handstand push-ups, v-ups, etc. There are plenty of exercises to get anyone started on the route to bodyweight training.

While I agree that this book is not the be all, end all source for bodyweight training but it isn't bad by any means. Are there better titles out there? To be honest, yes there are. I have collected almost every title available on bodyweight training and have found many that are better than Combat Conditioning. However, this title is still a good resource for those interested in bodyweight exercises, especially as they relate to muscular and cardio endurance.

The Real Deal

Follow the advice in this book and do the exercises regularly and consistently. If it`s difficult to perform any of them start with what you can and build up slowly. Furey knows his stuff and he will help you get there. Yes, he keeps it pretty simple - and it works. Just do it. This book has helped me (and many many others)tremendously.

The royal court routine is good, but it is only the first 3 pages.

This book is a one trick pony. It shows the Matt Furey's Royal Court routine with 3 moves. I like that exercise myself, but there is only material from it for 3 pages or so. After that the rest is very mediocre and turns into infomercial for the Furey's website and other products. This is an expensive product and you are essentially paying for just 1 workout (which is a good workout, I repeat).

Really like this book

Really like this book, just two caveats to keep in mind. The first is that due to its being published in 1976, the pages are somewhat brittle and tear easier than you'd expect. The second is to keep in mind that at the time this book was written, there were popularly-held beliefs that have since been proven to be myths - like that houses with closed windows will explode during a tornado, or that people panic at the first sign of danger. Wish someone would do another edition beginning in 1975 and going until the present.

Informative and easy to use

I found this book to be quite fascinating. I found it to be easy to use. Most of the entries are short and to the point. There are longer, more involved entries such as the sinking of the Titanic and the Iroquois Theater fire. Unfortunatly, there was never a second edition published of the book that would have more recent disasters.

First Rate Encylopedia

Every now and then a book comes along which can almost be said to be the last word in its field. Darkest Hours is one of those books. Nash covers worldwide disasters from ancient times to the late twentieth century, with entries that are both logical and properly placed. While many of the entries are short, Darkest Hours is no dictionary, but rather a true encylopedia. Nash includes a complete historical depiction of each tragedy, and usually good character descriptions as well. He takes us to the city of St.Pierre as it is about to be obliterated by Mt. Pelee. We find ourselves in Japan during history's worst tidal wave. The murder and mayhem of the Coconut Grove Nightclub Fire comes alive. Nash's writing does get to be rather gory at times, but those offended by this are not likely to be reading his book in the first place. In the end there are only two drawbacks to this book. First of all, it is so good that others wanting to do something similar may just give up trying. Secondly, the book has not been updated in twenty-five years. For most publications, this would call for a new edition. Here, it demands it.

About the Author

Mostafa Khalil is a senior staff engineer at VMware. He is a senior member of VMware Global Support Services and has worked for VMware for more than 13 years. Prior to joining VMware, he worked at Lotus/IBM. A native of Egypt, Mostafa graduated from the Al-Azhar University’s School of Medicine, and practiced medicine in Cairo. He became intrigued by the mini computer system used in his medical practice and began to educate himself about computing and networking technologies. After moving to the United States, Mostafa continued to focus on computing and acquired several professional certifications. He is certified as VCDX (3, 4, & 5), VCAP (4 & 5)-DCD, VCAP4-DCA, VCP (2, 3, 4, & 5), MCSE, Master CNE, HP ASE, IBM CSE, and Lotus CLP. Incredibly Detailed Storage Information

The book is filled with a treasure trove of historical knowledge that includes not only how storage (both as an industry and as it relates to VMware) evolved to what it is today, but why it evolved the way it did. You'll learn all about the VMFS file system and how to take advantage of it for all sorts of protocols and environments in both design and troubleshooting. This is simply a MUST HAVE book for anyone doing shared storage in VMware virtual environments as both reference material and a design aid, and will continue to be relevant long past the release of future vSphere 5.X products.

This book has it all!

This is the storage book that I have been waiting for! Being relatively new to Storage/DataCenter, I've frustrated with with every other book and whitepaper because they either assume you are able to place things in context, or don't go into enough detail. This book satisfied all of my complaints with other materials. The author does an excellent job starting out with the context (and in some cases history behind how we got here in the first place) and delving into the material. I really like how the topics are covered from all different angles, the author showed us how we should accomplish tasks with the GUI and command line. It was very important to me that both were covered. It was also great the author included small bits of the storage vendor's material as well. Learning the VMWare part is important, and the focus of the book, but without the other side (storage vendor) you don't have the full picture. I was mainly looking for iSCSI info (which there was plenty of) but I ended up taking away a lot more useful knowledge. Like all the other reviewers, I consider this the definitive vSphere 5 storage book and would highly recommend anyone dealing with vSphere and SAN/NAS purchase this immediately.

Good book for block-based information

This book contains extremely detailed information about block storage as it relates to vSphere. If you're running an environment consisting of FC, FCoE or iSCSI, this book will come in handy in endless ways.

However...

If you're looking for information regarding the implementation, design or inner workings of file-based (NFS) storage as it relates to vSphere, this is where the book falls flat. There is a smattering of info on how to work with VAAI primitives for NFS, but beyond that, the entire subject of NFS-based storage is barely mentioned at all. If you are looking for a book to help you understand the inner workings of the file-based datastore and how that works in relation to vSphere, keep looking.

It is just a great one, I like it! While I was reading it I even thought that Picasso's vision on art is even more remarkable and astonishing then most of his paintings. Vivid metaphors, incredible ideas, some of them might be over the top at times, but still. For instance one my favorite is his gorgeous idea on drawing that it couldn't be finished, as soon as it finished - it becomes a dead thing. He says that picture keeps on changing (after artist put his signature) in eyes of spectator, that depends on his state of mind etc. Or the other one - there is a lack of poetry in art, says Picasso, poetry fades away from pictures. There are plenty of stuff like that, I bet you'll enjoy it. Although, in the end of the book you start to feel bored and being loaded with repeating stuff. For now I'm looking for some kind of book like that - a collection of best quotes from various other painters. Originally I'm not a native english-speaker, sorry if I had several mistakes.

"Everyone wants to understand art," reflects Picasso early in this book. "Why not try to understand the songs of a bird?" It is a playful observation, and one that can only emanate, we imagine, from the mind of an artist throughly engaged with the material on palette. Picasso's witty comparison suggests art's elusive form and implies a truism which the reader will discover to be a driving force throughout these pages: The audience to a work of art, like its creator, succeeds by embracing rather than understanding the rendered object.

It is the artist's full embrace which resolves itself into an all-encompassing vision, the very contradictions inherent in that panoramic view requiring for their complete rendition an array of angled planes that can only be created by the shattering of constructive materials. Hence arises that formal abstraction that so often mystifies those who seek understanding through simple assertion. How many individuals, indeed, feel that certain works by Picasso misrepresent rather than render the real? "We all know that Art is not truth," muses Picasso in acknowledgment of this confusion. "Art is a lie that makes us realize truth, at least the truth that is given us to understand."

The truth that is so realized, adds Picasso, is something different from the artist's original vision, for the truly rendered subject, in a paradox, evaporates. Picasso recalls an effort to paint the portraits of two people; by the time his work was done his subjects existed no longer. In the artist's words: "The `vision' of them gave me a preliminary emotion; then little by little their actual presences became blurred; they developed into a fiction and then disappeared altogether, or rather they were transformed into all kinds of problems. They are no longer two people, you see, but forms and colors: forms and colors that have taken on, meanwhile, the idea of two people and preserve the vibrations of their life." So Picasso's human beings become real by disappearing from view, just as Isabel Archer becomes fully realized by vanishing at the conclusion of Henry James's novel.

Art reveals truth by lying. Subjects become realized by disappearing. Any reader witness to this book's magical paradoxes, arising as they do from that hidden place where the creative flint strikes steel, can only view Picasso's observations as lending to our vision of artistic discourse a rich chiaroscuro. We cannot say this book will deepen the reader's understanding of art, unless by that understanding one means an embrace of the imaginative machine's secret pistons.

An engaging, if not wholly cohesive, account of Picasso's sayoing and writings about art, but more. The strength of the book comes when he speaks on art. The ancilliary issues that come up serve to round out the figure of Picasso more, but may not quite be the art treatise you're looking for.
