Entertaining autobiography of the archetype city editor
By Lew Craig
James H. Richardson was the model of the hard bitten newspaper city editor. Richardson had over come alcoholism and drank four cokes during a working day to compensate. Richardson's book is a picture of a time gone forever. It is funny, profane and gruesome. It is not for the faint of heart, but creates a picture of the newspaper business that is hard to find elsewhere. My Dad worked for Richardson in the late 1930's. Dad wrote a brief autobiography. I will let his words speak as a prelude for any who might be interested in this book.
I have never ... been associated with or have known a group as
intelligent and free-spirited as were the people employed in
the editorial department of the Los Angeles Examiner. Seventy
percent of that group could have individually been the central character
in a book or a movie. One of them was. City editor, Jim Richardson,*
was the central character in at least three movies. The only I
can recall is “Come Fill The Cup,” starring James Cagney.
Richardson had to be the model for a number of movies about a
hard-bitten, fast talking, hard drinking city editor or reporter.
He was a dominating editor who terrified most of his reporters
and all the copy boys. He was immensely talented, often very jovial,
but was never admired for his human qualities.
One day during a summer, he sent me across the street to Walgreenrs
Drug store for coffee. As usual I came back with a cup of hot
coffee. I set it on his desk and he glanced at it. He screamed at me,
"A damned fool would know I don't want hot coffee. I want iced
coffee. What's wrong with you?" The editorial was a big room
housing as many as fifty people at desks at one time. He was
shouting so loudly that every typewriter in the room was silenced.
When he ceased his tirade, there was not a sound in the room.
I broke the silence, shouting as loud as he did, " I brought you
what you asked for, coffee. If you wanted iced coffee, why didn't
you tell me you wanted iced coffee?" Grabbing the carton of hot
coffee of his desk, I dumped it into his waste paper basket, went
back to the drug store and brought back a carton of iced coffee.
There was no response when I placed it on his desk. He did not raise
his head from reading a piece of copy. Several reporters shook my hand
after the incident and told me it was the first time anyone had talked
back to him.
Afterward, we were good friends. The remainder of my tenure, he
kidded me about getting my foot on the bottom rung of the ladder.
If something happened , any minor incident, with laughter he would say,
“Kid, you fell off the ladder. Now you have to work to get back on."
0nce or twice he would tell me I had made the second rung. At times
he would ask me to do personal favors for him.
When he sat at his desk each morning, his first request was
for a copyboy to run across the street and bring him four bottles of
Coke. He promptly opened all four bottles and lined them up on the
right edge of his desk. Through the day he would drink all four,
drinking the last swallow of the last bottle as he was putting on his
coat to go home.
